What I've Learned So Far, Part 1

What I\'ve Learned So Far, Part 1

In the past few months, what I?ve learned so far about myself through online marketing is the possibilities are endless. The affiliate, article, and internet businesses are all huge potential income avenues that are filled with additional revenue streams that I have yet to uncover.

My learning curve is steep but not impossible to conquer.

This journey is never boring and is always challenging. I think my blood would stop coursing through its veins, if I didn?t challenge myself to seek out new mountains to conquer. It?s been one heck of a roller coaster ride, to say the least!

The Party?s Not Over Yet

I?ve just begun to tap into the never ending potential of these three income streams and I don?t intend on stopping until I?ve mastered them. That?s my tentative plan, anyway.

The internet has leveled the playing field for everyday people like myself to earn a living online.

I don?t want to give the impression that this ride is completely free of cost. If you find ANYONE offering to teach you how to start a business with no money down, run in the opposite direction as fast as you can!

The saying, ?It takes money to make money?, is so true.

I?ve had to make small investments in time and money I hope will reap benefits in the long run. I don't regret it, though. Compared to the cost of attending a college or university for one semester, what I?ve invested so far is miniscule.

Which is a good thing because I?ve learned I?m not cut out to work for someone else year in and year out.

Unlike my Dad, who was employed for almost 30 years for the same company, the thought of doing that breaks me out in hives.

One painful experience I?ve learned is to always backup the content of my site. A week ago, I accidentally deleted it and the few articles and videos I posted are gone (Ay, Chihuahua!). I could just kick myself for not backing up my site.

But lesson learned. As soon as I complete a project I?m working on, I?ll continue rebuilding it better than ever.

On Writing

It's something I?ve always enjoyed. Although, I never thought I could write full time and I never imagined there was any possibility of making money doing something I enjoy.

Many types of genres, topics, and tools to get my writing juices flowing interest me.

But keeping a journal has been one of the primary ways I?ve used to record the events of my life and it really sparked my renewed interest in composition in the past couple of years.

It never felt like a chore because I was pouring my heart onto paper. In good times or in bad, keeping a journal is therapeutic for me and helps me to process my feelings and emotions.

What I?ve learned from expressing myself in a diary is I have a little skill that?s slowly developing in positive ways. This skill has been transferred to other content creation sites that like my body of work enough to publish it. And yes, I?m pleasantly surprised by that discovery!

Don?t misunderstand me.

I?m not trying to pass myself off as the next Maya Angelou or Toni Morrison. Nor do I even consider myself a writer, much less a published author, it?s just what I like to do.

With practice, written communication is something I would love to continue to explore.

I hope you enjoyed reading part 1 of ?What I?ve Learned So Far?. Leave your comments below and tell me what you think about it.

Guiding your Recently Graduated Kids through Debt Management ...

If there's one thing that we adults have learned as we approach retirement is that the world is not a secure place, no matter how hard you've tried to make it so. Living a debt-free life in America is?though not impossible?very difficult, and more and more people have realized that their debts can seriously hamper their ability to get what they want in life. Debt can make it difficult to have a stable marriage, to buy a house, or to relocate. Debt can also stop you from retiring when you are ready, and it can keep you from pursuing more education. Even if you've handled your debts wisely, it's very important to pass this knowledge on to our children. If you have children who are now adults and out on their own, here's how to guide them through a financially responsible life:?

1. Encourage them to pay back their student loans as aggressively as they are able.

Hopefully, your children's only debts after graduating from college are student loans. While this was the case with me and my siblings, many of my recently graduated friends had mountains of credit debt as well. Regardless of your child's debts after graduating, it's important to emphasize to your children to the need to start paying loans back as soon as they find work. Most young professionals will only pay monthly minimums for years before they realize that they could have paid much of their debt off a lot faster had they simply pitched in a little more every month.

2. Help them develop a budget for living expenses.

While budgeting may come second nature to you, it's often tough for young adults who are doing it for the first time. Sit down with your adult children and talk about ways that they can implement a reasonable budget on their expenses, including separate budgets for food, rent, entertainment, and savings.

3. Do not pay back their loans for them, especially if it means sacrificing your retirement savings.

One of the most tempting things parents usually want to do for their children is to pay back their loans. Of course, if, like many young adults in America, your child cannot find a job and is completely unable to pay back their debts, there's nothing wrong with stepping in and helping a little bit. At the same time, however, it's important to understand that we much continue to teach our children lessons even as adults. And one of the most important lessons that many people take their entire lifetimes to learn is personal responsibility. Of course, advise them on how they should manage their debt, but leave the actual repayment up to them. Don?t risk your retirement savings just to coddle your kids.

4. Talk to them about the importance of starting an emergency fund.

It's quite astounding to read the statistics concerning the percentage of people who have absolutely no emergency fund. Of course, it's hard to establish an emergency fund when you're busy paying off debts. Still, once your child has learned to manage her debt and budget correctly, encourage her to start an emergency fund that can pay for six months' worth of living expenses. Most financial advisers recommend having a fund that covers at least six months and as much as a year, especially in an uncertain economic climate.

At some point, of course, there isn't much that we can do when our kids are all grown up. At the same time, however, you'll be their parents forever, and they still will look to you for advice. Offering sound financial advice is perhaps the most important advice we can give. Good luck!

No tax, no blessing: German church insists on levy

BERLIN (AP) -- The road to heaven is paved with more than good intentions for Germany's 24 million Catholics. If they don't pay their religious taxes, they will be denied sacraments, including weddings, baptisms and funerals.

A decree issued last week by the country's bishops cast a spotlight on the longstanding practice in Germany and a handful of other European countries in which governments tax registered believers and then hand over the money to the religious institutions.

In Germany, Catholics, Protestants and Jews pay a surcharge of up to nine percent on their income tax bills ? or about ?56 ($72) a month for a single person earning a pre-tax monthly salary of about ?3,500 ($4,500).

For religious institutions, struggling to maintain their congregations in a secular society where the Protestant Reformation began 500 years ago, the tax revenues are vital.

The Catholic Church in Germany receives about ?5 billion ($6.5 billion) annually from the surcharge. For Protestants, the total is just above ?4 billion ($5.2 billion). Donations, in turn, represent a far smaller share of the churches' income than in the United States.

With rising prices and economic uncertainty, however, more and more Catholics and Protestants are opting to save their money and declare to tax authorities they are no longer church members, even if they still consider themselves believers.

"I quit the church already in 2007," Manfred Gonschor, a Munich-based IT-consultant, said. "It was when I got a bonus payment and realized that I could have paid myself a nice holiday alone on the amount of church tax that I was paying on it."

Gonschor added he was also "really fed up with the institution and its failures."

Such defections have hit the Catholic Church especially hard ? it has lost about 181,000 tax-paying members in 2010 and 126,000 a year later, according to official figures. Protestants, who number about 24 million nationwide, lost 145,000 registered members in Germany in 2010, the most recent year from which figures are available.

But the figures include some people who still want to baptize their children, take communion on major religious holidays, marry in a religious ceremony and receive Christian burials.

The group We are Church, which claims to represent tens of thousands of grassroots Catholics, said many Germans stop paying the tax because they disagree with the church's policies or simply want to save money ? not because they have lost their faith.

"I haven't quit because I still think that I might want to get married in a church one day, even though I know that's absurd," said Anna Ainsley, a 31-old-year banker and a Protestant from Frankfurt. "But when I see my tax declaration, then I think every year that I should finally quit."

Those are the people that Germany's Catholic bishops had in mind when they decreed on Sept. 20 that stopping the payment of religious taxes was "a serious lapse" and those who did so would then be excluded from a range of church activities.

"This decree makes clear that one cannot partly leave the Church," the bishops said in a statement. "It is not possible to separate the spiritual community of the Church from the institutional Church."

Wavering Catholics will now be sent letters reminding them of the consequences of avoiding the church tax, including losing access to all sacraments.

"Maybe you haven't considered the consequences of your decision and would like to reverse this step," a draft of the letter states.

Protestants have taken a less stern position, saying non-taxpayers are still welcome to attend services and take communion. But becoming a godparent, getting married in a church or taking a job in church-affiliated institutions such as hospitals or kindergartens are off-limits to those who stop paying their taxes.

Switzerland and Austria also tax Catholic and Protestant church members. In Denmark, the State Lutheran church collects a tax from its members. Members of Sweden's Lutheran Church pay around 1 percent of their income, collected by the national tax authorities, just as in Finland.

In Italy, tax-payers have the choice of diverting a small part of their income taxes to religious institutions, including the Catholic Church and the country's Jewish community, but the contribution is voluntary.

In none of those countries have the churches taken such a firm stand against dropouts.

So far German courts have stood by the bishops' decision. This week the country's top administrative court threw out a lawsuit against the archdiocese of Freiburg by retired theologian Hartmut Zapp, who has spent years fighting the Catholic Church over the tax.

Zapp argued that a Catholic should be free to stop paying but remain a member of the spiritual community and that his religious beliefs could not possibly be tied to a tax payment.

The archdiocese responded in a statement that "those who lack solidarity bid farewell to the community of believers."

The tax issue presents moral and ethical dilemmas to millions of German believers, even dividing couples.

Sonja Trott, a 34-year-old teacher from Munich, said she quit the Catholic Church 15 years ago because she no longer believed in its teachings.

"Now I'd like to convince my husband that he also should quit, that would save us a lot of money," she said.

But her husband, Christoph, a sales executive, says he cannot imagine refusing to pay on moral grounds because it would seem like a betrayal of his faith. "I don't like paying it, but I do because I fear the step of quitting the church."

He would prefer to donate part of the money to charities "but well, in Germany the payment determines whether I'm allowed to consider myself a Catholic or not."

For other Germans, it's unethical to stop paying the tax but continue to use the church when it suits them.

Christine Solf, a Munich-based consultant, says she doesn't attend services regularly but appreciates the church's charitable work. For her, church membership is also a family tradition.

"I know people who quit for financial reasons but then still want their children to be baptized. That's not OK in my opinion," she said.

Shortage of Engineers Is Causing 'Crisis' In Tech Industry
A lack of qualified workers in the tech industry is causing a crisis, says Microsoft. The firm has started lobbying in Washington, calling for a new approach to science, technology, engineering and math teaching at schools, and warning that if changes are not made, the U.S. will lose out to other, better-prepared nations.

Accused Colorado gunman made threats to psychiatrist

DENVER (Reuters) - Accused Colorado gunman James Holmes made threats to a university psychiatrist before a July shooting rampage at a suburban Denver screening of a Batman movie that killed 12 people, according to court documents released on Friday.

The University of Colorado psychiatrist reported those unspecified threats to campus police before the shooting at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," a court document filed a week after the shooting and unsealed on Friday showed.

Holmes, a former neuroscience graduate student, has been charged with murder and attempted murder over the rampage, one of the worst outbursts of U.S. gun violence in recent years. In addition to those who died, 58 people were wounded.

University psychiatrist Lynne Fenton, who has testified that she treated Holmes, 24, more than a month before the July 20 shooting, has said her professional relationship with Holmes ended in mid-June.

"The relationship was terminated after the defendant made threats towards who reported the matter to the University of Colorado (CU) police department," the newly unsealed documents said.

"As a result of these actions, university administration terminated the defendant's access privileges to all or part of the Anschutz campus," the documents said.

The documents said the threats were made to a university psychiatrist, but they were heavily redacted, and Fenton's name does not appear in the document.

Prosecutors have depicted Holmes as a young man whose once promising academic career was in tatters as he failed graduate school oral board exams in June and one of his professors suggested he may not have been a good fit for his competitive Ph.D. program.

They have said that Holmes lost his access to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus after making unspecified threats to a professor on June 12, after which he began a voluntary withdrawal from his program.

ARSENAL OF GUNS

Other court documents among the 57 unsealed on Friday give more insight into a notebook that Holmes mailed to Fenton the day before the massacre.

Prosecutors expressed frustration with a published report saying the notebook was "full of details about how he was going to kill people," and included "drawings and illustrations of the massacre," according to one document.

That information, given to Fox News from an unidentified law enforcement source, violated Holmes' doctor-patient privilege, prosecutors argued in the July 25 document.

Prosecutors said Holmes began "a detailed and complex plan" to commit murder and obtain an arsenal of guns and protective armor after he was denied access to campus facilities.

Holmes' attorney Daniel King, who analysts have said appears to be laying the groundwork for a possible insanity defense, has said his client suffers from an unspecified mental illness and had tried to get help before the shooting.

Previous media reports have said Fenton reported her concerns about Holmes to a campus threat assessment team and a campus police officer.

'I'm bored!' -- Research on attention sheds light on the unengaged mind

Thursday, September 27, 2012

You're waiting in the reception area of your doctor's office. The magazines are uninteresting. The pictures on the wall are dull. The second hand on the wall clock moves so excruciatingly slowly that you're sure it must be broken. You feel depleted and irritated about being stuck in this seemingly endless moment. You want to be engaged by something?anything?when a thought, so familiar from childhood, comes to mind: "I'm bored!"

Although boredom is often seen as a trivial and temporary discomfort that can be alleviated by a simple change in circumstances, it can also be a chronic and pervasive stressor that can have significant consequences for health and well-being.

Boredom at work may cause serious accidents when safety depends on continuous vigilance, as in medical monitoring or long-haul truck driving. On a behavioral level, boredom has been linked with problems with impulse control, leading to overeating and binge eating, drug and alcohol abuse, and problem gambling. Boredom has even been associated with mortality, lending grim weight to the popular phrase "bored to death."

Although it's clear that boredom can be a serious problem, the scientific study of boredom remains an obscure niche of research, and boredom itself is still poorly understood. Even though it's a common experience, boredom hasn't been clearly defined within the scientific community.

Psychological scientist John Eastwood of York University (Ontario, Canada) and colleagues at the University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo wanted to understand the mental processes that underlie our feelings of boredom in order to create a precise definition of boredom that can be applied across a variety of theoretical frameworks. Their new article, which brings together existing research on attention and boredom, is published in the September 2012 issue of Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Drawing from research across many areas of psychological science and neuroscience, Eastwood and colleagues define boredom as "an aversive state of wanting, but being unable, to engage in satisfying activity," which arises from failures in one of the brain's attention networks.

Specifically, we're bored when:

  • We have difficulty paying attention to the internal information (e.g., thoughts or feelings) or external information (e.g., environmental stimuli) required for participating in satisfying activity
  • We're aware of the fact that we're having difficulty paying attention
  • We believe that the environment is responsible for our aversive state (e.g., "this task is boring," "there is nothing to do").

The researchers are confident that integrating the disparate fields of cognitive neuroscience, social psychology, and clinical psychology will produce a more thorough understanding of boredom and attention?phenomena which are ubiquitous and intimately linked.

Armed with a precise and broadly applicable definition of boredom that gets at the underlying mental processes, the authors identify important next steps in research on boredom. Eastwood and his colleagues hope to help in the discovery and development of new strategies that ease the problems of boredom sufferers and address the potential dangers of cognitive errors that are often associated with boredom.

Virginia Belle: Weekend Snapshots

Our Fall so far has been packed with weekend road trips. ?While leaving town every weekend has made our weeks incredibly busy, we're enjoying every second of our weekends away with friends and family.

?Friday night we stayed close to home and made a point to enjoy as much time on our deck as possible. ?Before long all of our meals will be forced inside by the cooler temperatures so we embraced Fall with our beverages for the evening but hung on to Summer with a grilled meal on the deck.

Saturday morning I squeezed in a run and we enjoyed a delicious breakfast before heading to our favorite town, Charlottesville, for the day. ?The short drive there was gorgeous and we made it just in time to watch our Wahoos lose horribly at a local bar. ?After the game we made our way to our friend's, Kathryn and Ryan's, house. ?The first thing on our agenda for the evening was a tasting at Starr Hill Brewing Company. ?We're huge fans of their beer so it was great to visit the actual brewery and taste some delicious beer. ?Our favorite beer of the day was definitely the appropriately named, Monticello.

Saturday night was spent?cuddling with K&R's absolutely adorable son, Reid, being treated to a fabulous homemade dinner, and catching up by the fire pit on a perfect Fall evening. ?They were fabulous hosts and managed to make having a baby and entertaining friends seem like a breeze. ?I already can't wait to visit this sweet family again soon!

Sunday afternoon our group of 5 packed a picnic from Greenwood Gourmet Grocery and made the short trip to King Family Vineyards for polo, wine, and gorgeous mountain views. ?We started the event with a brief photo shoot on the beautiful grounds before settling in to watch the polo match. ?Almost everyone from our church group also made the trip to Charlottesville for a day of polo and it was great to catch up and just enjoy the day with everyone. ?The match lasted about 2 hours and when it ended, the players took a moment to visit the spectators. ?If you're ever in the Charlottesville area on a Sunday I highly recommend this free event, it's fun for all ages and definitely worth the drive! ?After the match we said goodbye to our wonderful hosts for the weekend and our church friends and made our way back to DC for another busy week.

How were your weekends?

MSI makes AMD-laden GX60 gaming laptop official with A10 heart ...

MSI launches GX60 allAMD gaming laptop with A10 processor, Radeon HD 7970M graphics

We can't say that there's a huge cross-section of buyers who want a gaming laptop but refuse to touch Intel components. Whatever the size, MSI likely has that group sewn up with the official unveiling of the GX60 following a stealth appearance at Computex. The 15.6-inch portable is built as showcase for AMD's latest mobile technology: it revolves around a 2.3GHz, quad-core A10-4600M processor using the Piledriver architecture as well as a Radeon HD 7970M to feed its 1080p screen at full speed. Thankfully, the PC is more than just a marketing vehicle and carries some of the gamer-tuned parts that we've seen in other MSI rigs, such as dual SSDs in a RAID stripe, a low-lag Killer networking chipset and a heavy-duty SteelSeries keyboard. Buying a GX60 may prove to be the real obstacle -- in keeping with most MSI introductions, there's no mention of a price or ship date, and none of the usual suspects have it in stock as of this writing.

Are Paid Surveys An Affiliate Program? | Website Traffic Articles

?

Getting paid for surveys is one way to make money online. This is a real business model to make money.

Affiliate marketing is another way to make money on the Internet. Affiliate marketing is also a business model.

Is there a way to combine taking paid surveys and affiliate marketing to make money? The answer to that is yes.

I personally know people who have started their own affiliate program using the paid survey business model. They then recruit new members to take surveys provided for them by incentive companies using paid surveys.

I also know people who have joined paid survey companies such as Cash Crate and make money in three ways.

1. Take surveys and get paid for completing them.

2. Recruit new members and make money when the new member takes a survey. This is how paid surveys become an affiliate program.

3. Earn commissions when your new members also recruit members who take surveys. This is known as a 2-tier affiliate program.

So what is the best way to do this?

Taking paid surveys personally generates guaranteed cash flow. Recruiting new members to take surveys is easy if you know how to use the Internet to do it. The downside of this is you never know for sure which members are going to take a survey, so you?re not guaranteed any money until they complete one.

However, if you stick with this long-term you well eventually recruit enough members to complete surveys on a regular basis that you will earn commissions every month.

You?ll also find a certain number of these members that will go out and recruit new members of their own. This can end up generating you a large number of affiliates who are taking surveys and you are earning a smaller commission on the second level.

Generally paid surveys are not thought of as affiliate programs. The affiliate business model is thought of more from companies such as Amazon, ClickBank, and Google Adsense.

ClickBank is a large digital information affiliate program. Amazon is the largest retailer in the world and has an excellent affiliate program for both digital and physical products.

In the Google Adsense affiliate program you get paid when people click on ads. Google pays out hundreds of millions of dollars in commissions and you have no doubt seen some of these ads on websites or when you?re using the Google search engine.

Cost Per Action programs (CPA) is another form of affiliate marketing. You earn money by getting people to perform a specific action such as completing a lead form.

When you join an affiliate programs such as Cash Crate you are really using the CPA business model. You promote a landing page and encourage people to join the program by filling out a short sign-up form.

Then when they take surveys and recruit new members who take surveys you make money. This makes paid surveys an affiliate program.

A Few More Day of LSNED?18, 19 & 20 | Who's This Chick

Posted on September 25, 2012

Worked to catch up on my "Learn Something New Everyday" mini from Shimelle's September online class.? So for this post:

Day 18 brings a reminder to stop over thinking my scrapbook process.?

Day 19 takes to the beginning of this year soon after we moved (for the 11th time!).? I was lucky in this home to have a room right of the family room for my scrapbooking.? The problem was, I just wasn't making any layouts.? I had a pile of pictures, no job, and empty nest, and too much time on my hands.? Still, I was getting nothing done!? So I decided to make a change, instead of spending money on more supplies to store away and organize over and over, I took some online classes.? It started with the abundance of free classes at Two Peas, and then buying classes.? Also, starting a blog game me a self-imposed commitment to posting and completing layouts.? Tada!? Total turn around.? (The Word stickers are "Tiny Text" TX905 Cosmo Cricket)

Day 20 brings me to exploring ways people know me?who I am to them, what I mean to them.? I tend to be the problem solver.? (mostly because I am home and able to spend the time on the phone calls, research, etc).?

?Too holy? for sex? The problem of a married Jesus

Karen L. King/Harvard University via Reuters

A previously unknown scrap of ancient papyrus written in ancient Egyptian Coptic is pictured in this undated handout photo obtained by Reuters September 18, 2012. The papyrus has four words written in Coptic that provide the first unequivocal evidence that within 150 years of his death, some followers of Jesus, believed him to have been married.

By Becky Bratu, NBC News

If a fourth-century fragment of papyrus that purportedly quotes Jesus telling his disciples about "my wife" is authenticated, it could upend the modern church?s understanding of the ?son of God.?

?If Jesus is a normal human being and he?s sexual, that?s the real fear,? James Tabor, a biblical scholar at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the co-author of books about Jesus and his family, told NBC News. ?You can?t think of Jesus like that because he?s too holy.?

The Bible contains no explicit mentions of Jesus being either married or not married, but few churches have room for the idea of a sexual Jesus. The Catholic Church?s celibate priesthood is built on the belief that Jesus was not married. Eastern Orthodox priests are often married, but the church teachings don?t mention a married Jesus. Protestant ministers are allowed to marry, but there again, it is not common to teach that Jesus himself was married.

Reality check on Jesus and his 'wife'

"I would say that the more conservative groups might be more inclined to be bothered by the idea of a married Jesus, and especially that he might have had a child, god forbid, since that would really raise questions about his "divinity," since they see him as fully human and fully God," Tabor subsequently explained in an email.

"Can God sleep with a woman and have a child? It just doesn't fit the concept they want for Jesus," he said.

New questions are being raised about whether Jesus was married after Dr. Karen King, a historian at Harvard Divinity School, found an ancient papyrus with words translated to Jesus referencing a wife. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

The Unification Church, however, does believe that Jesus was supposed to get married, and some of the early teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stated Jesus was married and even fathered children, according to Cky Carrigan of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, although that belief is not widespread today.

The Mormon and the Unification Church?s beliefs, however, have more to do with their own theology of marriage rather than with scripture, Ben Witherington III, a New Testament professor at the Asbury Theological Seminary, told NBC News.

Unlike their modern counterparts, there is evidence that some early Christians -- the Valentinian Gnostics -- believed Jesus was married, according to April DeConick, a biblical scholar at Rice University. The recently discovered papyrus, she told NBC News, would be the second piece of evidence from an ancient Christian gospel that early Christians were not bothered by the idea of a married Jesus. The first piece of evidence -- which DeConick said comes from the Gospel of Philip -- identifies Mary Magdalene as Jesus' wife.

NYT: Historian says piece of papyrus refers to Jesus' wife

Karen L. King, the Harvard Divinity School professor who unveiled the papyrus, cautioned that the discovery does not serve as evidence that the historical Jesus was married.

Karen L. King, the Hollis Professor of Divinity at Harvard University holds a previously unknown ancient papyrus fragment from Egypt that has four words written in Coptic that provide the first unequivocal evidence that within 150 years of his death, some followers of Jesus, believed him to have been married.

"This new gospel doesn't prove that Jesus was married, but it tells us that the whole question only came up as part of vociferous debates about sexuality and marriage,? King said in a press release. ?From the very beginning, Christians disagreed about whether it was better not to marry, but it was over a century after Jesus' death before they began appealing to Jesus' marital status to support their positions."

The Christians who eventually became dominant, DeConick said, believed celibacy was the route to heaven.

?Catholicism was deeply shaped by monasticism in its formative period,? Witherington said, adding that he thinks this belief brought about ?a very deficient view of the goodness of human sexuality as a gift from god.?

?There?s just nothing biblical about that,? he argued. But Catholics couldn?t imagine Jesus as married, because that would have ?tainted? his holy image, he said.

DeConick, who explored sex and gender in early Christianity in her book, ?Holy Misogyny,? said that in the ancient world, the female body was considered weak, pitiful and wretched.

Sun Myung Moon, founder of Unification Church, dies at 92

?We have so many hundreds of years of an understanding of sexuality that in some way sex is not divine, it?s not sacred,? she said. ?It?s going to be a long hard road for people to see a figure that they think is god as being engaged in a sexual activity ? even with a wife.?

Witherington believes most churches will likely be ambivalent about a married Jesus because the implications are unclear. But he said some liberal Protestants might even accept the idea that Jesus could have had children in the same way as some Protestant churches no longer teach the doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary.

?It doesn?t mean [the children]'d be as perfect as dad,? he said. ?That would be a hard act to follow whether you?re a wife or a kid.?

The public, however, appears more open to the idea of a married Jesus. Ongoing for centuries, the debate about the possibility that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene was also the subject of author Dan Brown?s bestseller, ?The Da Vinci Code.? Both the book and the recent discovery of the papyrus fragment that reignited the debate have garnered a positive reaction from the public.

?Maybe it makes him more human for us,? Tabor said.

Witherington, who wrote a book debunking some of the statements made in ?The Da Vinci Code,? said he encountered the same ?enormous positive reaction? on his book tour at the time.

?There was such a willingness to believe that what Dan Brown was saying was the gospel about Jesus,? he said.

?Jesus was an early Jew. I don?t think Jesus had any qualms about marriage,? Witherington added. ?But [Jesus] also thinks it was perfectly viable for an able-bodied man to become single for the sake of [god?s] kingdom.?

6 teen offenders caught after knocking out guard

Six teenage boys escaped from a juvenile detention center in Washington state after knocking out a female staff member, but all were captured a few hours later early Sunday in nearby woods, authorities said.

The King County Sheriff's department said it received word of the escape at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday from Echo Glen Children's Center in Snoqualmie, about 25 miles east Seattle.

"They basically attacked the staff member, knocked her out, took her keys and fled," spokeswoman Sgt. Cindi West said. The teens left the woman unconscious and locked in a room at the facility, she said.

Witnesses told detectives that the staff member was beaten with a chunk of ice frozen in a water bottle, the Seattle Times reported.

"It definitely appears this was planned, the detective on the scene said when they found the boys they had their packed bags with them," West told the Times.

The six males, three 14-year-olds and three 15-year-olds, were serving time for offenses including assault, possession of firearms and burglary, West said.

Law officers on the ground with search dogs and in the air combed the area on the outskirts of Snoqualmie before a helicopter crew spotted them in woods near the center using thermal-imaging equipment, according to West. All were caught by 2 a.m. Sunday.

"The biggest reason they were apprehended so quickly was the helicopter," she said. "Without that we would have been looking for needles in a haystack. It allowed us to apprehend them before they got into the neighborhood."

Echo Glen Children's Center is a medium and maximum security facility run by the state Department of Social and Health Services. The facility is not fenced, but is bordered by natural wetlands. It provides treatment services for younger male offenders and is the main institution for female juvenile offenders, according to its website.

Calls to the facility's deputy superintendent Sunday morning were not immediately returned.

Once the teens were spotted by the helicopter, they split up into three groups and ran in different directions, West said. Deputies in the helicopter were able to direct deputies on the ground, including K-9 units, to where the teens were running or hiding.

One was bitten by a police dog while trying to escape and was taken to a hospital for treatment, West said. The others were arrested without incident and booked on charges of assault, unlawful imprisonment and escape, she said.

The staff member who was attacked lay unconscious in a locked room at the juvenile facility until other inmates found her and reported the incident, authorities said.

Ntrig release teases that Fujitsus Stylistic Q702 will come with active pen

Stylus maven N-trig has revealed that Fujitsu's Stylistic Q702 laptop/tablet hybrid will be the first to shop with the company's new G4 DuoSense pen and multi-touch digitizer. As such, it'll be able to use a new active pen stylus that the company, perhaps unsurprisingly, promises will provide a "pen-on-paper handwriting experience." Of course, we won't be able to judge that for ourselves until the units arrive on our doorstep some time after Windows 8 does next month, but rest assured, we'll be checking.

A big thank you goes to family and friends together with the members of Rotary who put their hands in their pockets and raised $745. It is also necessary to thank those who counted laps for us, especially those who got up in the middle of the night. We had some sponsors, John Meagher of 360 Property group who supplied out outfits, Schweppes Drinks for keeping us hydrated and IGA Barwon Heads for fruit etc. Many thanks to all.

I would also like to thank the team, for firstly embracing the project and then getting into the training mode to swim which at the time didn't sound too hard but by lunchtime on Sunday I can assure readers we knew we had been in a Mega event!

Good luck for 2013."

Guest Speaker:?

1. Helen Buttriss on the BEAR Program (Business Expansion And Retention program) The business community has given $90,000 to the community in the last few years. There are 120 businesses in our area, 60% of which operate from home as well as the Industrial estate and shop fronts. The program is designed to bring members of the business community together to express their concerns and ideas about what helps and hinders small business. Information will be gathered through the interview process where trained volunteer interviewers will ask set questions to approximately 100 businesses over a three-week period. From the data gathered it is hoped that community building, employment, tourism needs and public amenities and infrastructure will be enhanced. The main aim is to encourage all concerned to work together and to talk to each other, to understand the value of networking and to build better and stronger relationships with Council.

2. Martin Stow who has multiple sclerosis also thanked us for our efforts with the Mega Swim.

Martin is an ex-policeman, who worked with the Yorkshire Constabulary, he enjoyed his time in the police force ? walking the best, talking to people and knowing his community.

He told us how to use a truncheon and a police whistle and the importance of knowing where to get a good cuppa. He told us how to arrest someone and to get an admission of guilt. He was involved with the family of the Yorkshire Ripper and guarding prostitutes at that time. It was during the miner's strikes that he learned trudging and wedging, a very effective means of dissipating aggressive behavior. Practical jokes were rife to defray the boredom, as were the fish and chips especially at night. There were good times and bad times especially when faced with a gun (the police were unarmed). Uniform was important with boots polished. Martin believed this showed respect for the uniform and what it represented. This was a lively talk with lots of humour.

- Note to members ? Apologies must be in by 11a.m. on MONDAY! Notification later than this is of no use. Co-operation with this would be appreciated. Phone number 0457 315 900
