Petraeus says al Qaeda role known early on

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former CIA Director David Petraeus told Congress on Friday that he and the spy agency had sought to make clear from the outset that September's deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, involved an al Qaeda affiliate, lawmakers said.

Petraeus told the House of Representatives intelligence committee that "there were extremists in the group" that launched the initial attack on the diplomatic mission, describing them as affiliates of al Qaeda and other extremist groups, said Representative C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, the committee's top Democrat. "The fact is that he clarified it."

Another lawmaker, Republican Representative Peter King, said Petraeus' account in the closed-door session differed from the assessment that the CIA chief gave to Congress two months ago, just days after the September 11 attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

"He also stated that he thought all along he made it clear that there were significant terrorist involvement, and that is not my recollection of what he told us on September 14," King said.

Petraeus later appeared before the Senate intelligence panel. His appearances before lawmakers came the week after he quit as CIA chief because of an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. Lawmakers said a somber Petraeus told them his resignation had nothing to do with issues related to Benghazi or any reluctance to testify before Congress.

"The general did not address any specifics of the affair, of that issue," Democratic Representative Jim Langevin said. "What he did say in his opening statement was that he regrets the circumstances that led to his resignation."

Petraeus, a retired Army four-star general, slipped into the closed sessions unseen by a swarm of media.

The assault on the U.S. mission in Benghazi has turned into a flash point between President Barack Obama and Republicans, who accuse the White House of misleading the public in the days following the attack.

Some Republicans have suggested that Obama and his aides wanted to downplay the idea they had failed to prevent a terrorist attack, which might have dampened the president's re-election chances on November 6. Obama has denied that implication.

Petraeus' testimony to the House and Senate intelligence committees seems unlikely to dampen the controversy over why the Obama administration had asserted for days after the Benghazi attack that it had sprung from a spontaneous protest prompted by an anti-Muslim film.

Republicans have targeted Obama's U.N. ambassador, Susan Rice, who in five Sunday talk show appearances on September 16 said the assault was prompted by the video and then morphed into a more violent act. But she told CBS's "Face the Nation" that day that it was "clear that there were extremist elements that joined in and escalated the violence."

Rice aides and White House officials have said that she had based her remarks on talking points provided by the CIA.

'A FRIEND'

Lawmakers appeared to treat the question of his personal life with kid gloves. They said the questioning was sometimes awkward against the backdrop of the Broadwell scandal and because some of them have known Petraeus for years and think highly of his military service in which he ran the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"I consider him a friend, which made the questioning tough, to be honest with you," King told reporters.

"I've known him for nine years now. I actually asked him to run for president a few years ago," he said.

The affair has raised questions about whether any classified information was divulged to Broadwell that would affect national security. So far, FBI investigators have not discovered anything to suggest that was the case, law enforcement sources said.

Before his resignation, Petraeus had gone to Libya to interview people about what happened in Benghazi on September 11, when there was a series of escalating attacks on the diplomatic mission and a nearby CIA annex.

Ruppersberger said the committee learned on Thursday during a closed hearing in which it saw a real-time film of the events in Benghazi that the attack on the diplomatic mission was different than the subsequent attack on the nearby annex.

"The first incident was a lot different than the second incident in the annex," he said. The attack on the mission involved looters and people setting buildings on fire, while the attack on the annex was "well-organized" and involved people who had experience in conducting attacks, he said.

Bioprinting has promising future: Scientists building structures for cells to grow on, in order to regenerate tissue

ScienceDaily (Nov. 15, 2012) ? The pioneering concept of bioprinting is delivering promising results according to one of the early champions of the process, Professor Brian Derby of The University of Manchester.

Writing in the journal Science, Professor Derby of The School of Materials, looks at how the concept of using printer technology to build structures in which to grow cells, is helping to regenerate tissue.

Both inkjet and laser printer technology can be used to build the 3D scaffolds that cells can be grown in and also place the cells in these structures simultaneously. Professor Derby explains how bioprinting works: "Inkjet technology places the structure's material in small droplets, which then solidify. More droplets are then placed on top of the previous ones in a specific pattern. The structure is built using this method which is generally referred to as additive manufacture. Laser printing uses light to solidify the structure's material layer upon layer. These methods have allowed us to develop very complex scaffolds which better mimic the conditions inside the body."

The scaffold provides a surface for the cells to adhere, thrive and multiply. Both the scaffold material, composition and its internal architecture control the behaviour and well-being of the cells inside.

In his review article Professor Derby looks at experiments where porous structures have been made through bioprinting. They are then placed in the body to help act as a scaffold to encourage cell growth. The cells colonize the structure and it either dissolves or becomes part of the body. This type of treatment can help patients suffering from problems such as cavity wounds. Clinical trials are currently taking place around the world to perfect this technology, and Professor Derby says it is moving towards becoming an established form of science.

Professor Derby also looks at how stem cells are being grown in printed structures that have been impregnated with certain chemicals. The chemicals are inserted during the printing process and can determine the type of cell the stem cells develop into. For example stem cells could be programmed to become cells that make up bone tissue or cartilage.

But there are limitations to the technology which is holding back breakthroughs such as the ability to grow an entire organ. Studies have found that it is very difficult to actually print the cells at the same time as making the structure that will house them. The stress on the cell as it goes through both the inkjet and laser process can damage the cell membrane. Cell survival rates have also been variable, ranging from between 40 to 95%.

The technology is also some way off progressing from an experimental platform to clinical practice. Whilst scaffolds are being clinically trialled, actually transplanting cells grown in an external structure into a patient is a more advanced process. It is still not possible at present to guarantee a consistent quality, which is required by medical device regulations.

But research is being carried out to grow external cells into tissue, such as a patch of skin, and transplant that into a patient. Professor Derby is currently working with Ear, Nose and Throat surgeons at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. He wants to use bioprinting to print cells without using a scaffold. The printed cells form a sheet that can be used for grafts inside the body, for example in the mouth or nose.

Professor Derby says: "It is very difficult to transplant even a small patch of tissue to repair the inside of the nose or mouth. Current practice, to transplant the patient's skin to these areas, is regarded as unsatisfactory because the transplants do not possess mucous generating cells or salivary glands. We are working on techniques to print sheets of cells that are suitable for implantation in the mouth and nose."

One area which Professor Derby's review article highlights for the future is the ability to grow structures which can model cancerous tumours. These could then be used to test new drugs, which it's hoped will advance the search for more effective treatments.

Writing the review article has encouraged Professor Derby that there is a strong future for bioprinting and whilst growing organs is still a long way off, the advances being made in this area are very promising.

Samsung Galaxy S2 4G available on Virgin Mobile for $370

Yes, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been available since summer. Yes, Virgin Mobile?s 4G is still driven through Clearwire?s dying WiMax network. But the Samsung Galaxy S2 is still a great phone and it?s going to be available from Virgin Mobile starting today. The device, simply named Samsung Galaxy S2 4G, will cost you $370, and since there are no contracts to deal with for any of Virgin?s services then you won?t be forced to stay that for two years if you don?t want to be.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 features Samsung?s 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos 4 processor, a 4.52 inch display, 1GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel HD camera with a 1.3 megapixel front camera and more. Thankfully enough, Virgin?s version comes with Android 4.0 (with TouchWiz) out of the box so you won?t have to deal with the painstakingly-long wait Galaxy S2 users had to with going from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich. Jelly Bean is a different story, though, so keep that in mind.

It might not be a popular option for the Virgin faithful with news that Sprint might be making its 4G LTE network the primary 4G technology for Boost and Virgin soon, though considering that?s just a rumor some of you may not care to wait to see if it pans out.

And sure, you?d be getting 2011 technology, but for $370 there?s not much more you can expect. We?d love to see Virgin offering the Galaxy S3 soon as it comes up on its half-year mark but that?ll probably depend on factors that simply can?t be rushed. In any case, if you?re sold on this phone then you can finish the deed over at Virgin?s website starting today.

Double-dip: Eurozone back in recession last quarter

LONDON (AP) -- The 17-country eurozone has bowed to the inevitable and fallen back into recession for the first time in three years as a sprawling debt crisis took its toll on the region's stronger economies.

And with surveys pointing to increasingly depressed conditions across the eurozone at a time of high unemployment in many countries, there are fears that the recession will deepen, and make the debt crisis even more difficult to handle.

Official figures Thursday showed that the eurozone contracted by 0.1 percent in the July to September period from the quarter before as economies including Germany and the Netherlands suffer from falling demand.

The decline reported by Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, was in line with market expectations and follows on from the 0.2 percent fall recorded in the second quarter. As a result, the eurozone is officially in recession, commonly defined as two straight quarters of falling output.

"We can dispense with the euphemisms and equivocation, and openly proclaim that the euro area economy is indeed in technical recession," said James Ashley, senior European economist at RBC Capital Markets.

Because of the eurozone's grueling three-year debt crisis, the region has the focus of concern for the world economy. The eurozone's economy is worth around ?9.5 trillion, or $12.1 trillion, which puts it on a par with the U.S. economy. The region, with its 332 million population, is the U.S.'s largest export customer, and any fall-off in demand will hit order books.

While the U.S has managed to bounce back from its own savage recession in 2008-09, albeit inconsistently, and China continues to post still-strong growth, Europe's economies have been on a downward spiral ? and there is little sign of any improvement in the near-term.

The eurozone has managed to avoid returning to recession for the first time since the financial crisis following the collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers, mainly thanks to the strength of its largest single economy, Germany.

But even that country is struggling now as confidence wanes and exports drain in light of the debt problems afflicting large chunks of the eurozone.

Germany's economy grew a muted 0.2 percent in the third quarter, down from a 0.3 percent increase in the previous quarter. Over the past year, Germany's annual growth rate has more than halved to 0.9 percent from 1.9 percent.

Perhaps the most dramatic decline among the eurozone's members was seen in the Netherlands, whose economy shrank 1.1 percent on the previous quarter.

Five eurozone countries are in recession ? Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Cyprus. Those five are also at the center of Europe's debt crisis and are imposing austerity measures, such as cuts to pensions and increases to taxes, in an attempt to stay afloat.

As well as hitting workers' incomes and living standards, these measures have also led to a decline in economic output and a sharp increase in unemployment.

Spain and Greece have unemployment rates of over 25 percent. Their young people are faring even worse with every other person out of work. As well as being a cost to governments who have to pay out more for benefits, it carries a huge social and human cost.

Protests across Europe on Wednesday highlighted the scale of discontent and with economic surveys pointing to the downturn getting worse, the voices of anger may well get louder still.

"The likelihood is that this anger will continue to grow unless European leaders and policymakers start to act as if they have a clue as to how to resolve the crisis starting to unravel before their eyes," said Michael Hewson, markets analyst at CMC Markets.

The wider 27-nation EU, which includes non-euro countries, avoided the same fate. It saw output rise 0.1 percent during the quarter, largely on the back of an Olympics-related boost in Britain.

The EU's output as a whole is greater than the U.S. It is also a major source of sales for the world's leading companies. Forty percent of McDonald's global revenue comes from Europe - more than it generates in the U.S. General Motors, meanwhile, sold 1.7 million vehicles in Europe last year, a fifth of its worldwide sales.

The Patriot : Forum promotes domestic violence awareness at FMU

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, INC recently hosted a forum on domestic violence to teach FMU students the importance of being aware of the warning signs that point to unhealthy and possibly violent relationships in your family.

The Executive Director and Founder of the Naomi Project, Joyce Ford, delivered sobering statistics on domestic violence.

?The most common source of injury among women is the physical abuse by male social partners,? Ford said.? ?Also if every woman victimized by domestic violence last year were to join hands in a line, the string of people would expand from New York to Los Angeles and back again.?

Ford, a veteran counselor with 33 years of experience was not there to hinder women from getting involved with social partners but to give them the tools for healthy, non-violent relationships.

?With one in four women in domestic violence situations, the word must be spread to our young ladies to be prepared.? This has become an epidemic in South Carolina, as well as the nation as a whole.?

?I started as a volunteer 33 years ago working at a crisis center and did that for 27 years,? Ford said. ?Through those years, I saw the same women coming in and out of the center, sadly going back to their violent partners. I started The Naomi Project six years ago to give those same women a chance.? A place to get away from a violent situation, sort of like a cool-down period for women and their families to get themselves together and weigh their options for the future.?

Ford went on to emphasize the severity of this problem.

?Boys who witness their father?s violence are ten-times more likely to engage in spousal abuse later in adulthood than boys from non-violent homes,? Ford said.? ?I am not trying to scare you, but I want you to arm yourselves with information to make good choices, realize warning signs and protect yourself.?

Ford stressed the importance of recognizing warning signs.

?Information is the key,? Ford said. ?At The Naomi Project, we give out checklists to people who ask for help or just need to get educated to prevent this from happening in their lives.?

This checklist gives the definition for and possible causes of abuse and warning signs of a violent relationship.? It also gives safety tips to follow and numbers to call for more information and for help.

For more information on this or if you have more specific questions, please either call The Naomi Project at (843) 615-1548 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 799-7233.

(AP) ? Xi Jinping became leader of China on Thursday, securing the Communist Party's top spot and oversight of the military in a political transition upset by scandals that have added fuel to public demands for change as the country faces slower economic growth.

Xi's elevation to party general secretary and chairman of the commission that oversees the People's Liberation Army was announced in a dispatch by the state Xinhua News Agency, following a weeklong party congress that underlined the communists' determination to remain firmly in power.

Xi will lead a new seven-member collective leadership of technocrats: Li Keqiang, the presumptive premier; Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang; Shanghai party secretary Yu Zhengsheng; propaganda chief Liu Yunshan; Vice Premier Wang Qishan; and Tianjin party secretary Zhang Gaoli.

The members of the new panel filed onto stage at the Great Hall of the People and Xi addressed the gathered reporters.

The son of a party elder, and vice president for the past five years, Xi will lead the world's No. 2 economy and newest diplomatic and military power amid increasingly vocal calls for economic and political reform ? including from within the 82-million-member party itself.

At ease with colleagues, Xi takes over the party leadership from the stiff and technocratic Hu Jintao, and is expected to assume the presidency in March.

Microsoft's Windows chief Sinofsky steps down

8 hrs.

Microsoft said the head of its flagship Windows division and the driving force behind Windows 8, Steven Sinofsky, will be leaving the company with immediate effect, shortly after the software giant launched the Surface tablet.

Sinofsky, who presented at the launch of the Windows 8 operating system in New York City last month, will be succeeded by Julie Larson-Green, who will head the Windows hardware and software division, the company said in a statement.

Tami Reller will remain chief financial officer and chief marketing officer and will assume responsibility for the business of Windows.

Both executives will report directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Microsoft said.

The company gave no reason for Sinofsky's departure.

At the launch event in October, Sinofsky and his team showed off a range of devices running Windows 8 from PC makers such as Lenovo Group Ltd and Acer Inc, but devoted most of their energy to the second half of the presentation and the Surface tablet, the first computer Microsoft has made itself.

Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi said the departure seemed sudden and it was odd that there was no handover period.

"Many link this to the modest sales of Surface but it is hard to think it all boils down to that," she said.

While there was a lot riding on Surface, the departure may have more to do with the kind of change that Surface signified in the Microsoft business model towards hardware, Milanesi said.?

Many on NY's Long Island still dark after Sandy

HICKSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) ? Two weeks after Superstorm Sandy, while most utilities have restored electricity to nearly all their customers, there was one glaring exception Monday: a Long Island power company with more outages ? almost 60,000 Monday ? than all the others combined.

As people on Long Island fumed over the cold and the darkness and complained that they couldn't get answers from the company, the Long Island Power Authority said in its defense that the storm was worse than anyone could have imagined and that it didn't just damage outdoor electrical lines; it caused flooding that touched home and business breaker boxes.

LIPA also acknowledged that an outdated computer system for keeping customers notified has added to people's frustration.

But some say the government-run utility should have seen it coming. It was recently criticized in a withering state report for lax preparation ahead of last year's Hurricane Irene and for the 25-year-old computer system used to pinpoint outages and update customers.

"It's antiquated. I think they're negligent," said Phil Glickman, a retired Wall Street executive from South Bellmore who waited 11 days to get electricity back.

LIPA has restored power to nearly 1.1 million homes and offices all together. About 46,000 still waiting for the lights to come back on are along Long Island's south shore and Rockaway Peninsula and had water damage to electrical panels and wiring, so their service can't be restored without an inspection and possibly repairs. The utility said it expects to restore service to the last 11,000 customers outside flooded areas by late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

At its peak, the storm knocked out power to 8.5 million customers in 10 states, with New York and New Jersey bearing the brunt. Those outages have been nearly erased, though Consolidated Edison, the chief utility in New York City, has cited problems similar to LIPA's, saying about 16,300 customers in flooded areas of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island can't get service until their internal electrical equipment is repaired, tested and certified.

LIPA customer Priscilla Niemiera, whose finished basement in Seaford flooded, said her house needs to be inspected and she can't get any answers. Every time she calls the utility, she said, she gets hung up on.

"I think LIPA should be broken up into small companies and it shouldn't be a monopoly anymore because this is every single time we have a disaster. And then they raise the rates. We're paying very high rates. We're paying high taxes, high electric. Everything," she said.

LIPA, whose board is chosen by the governor and lawmakers, contracts with National Grid for service and maintenance. Last year, its board chose a new contractor, New Jersey's Public Service Enterprise Group, which will take over in 2014. Gov. Andrew Cuomo criticized the storm response of all New York utilities in the region, saying their management had failed consumers.

Asked Monday about LIPA board vacancies he hasn't filled and whether he takes responsibility for what's happening there, Cuomo called the authority a holding company that became "an intergovernmental political organization." He said National Grid was the actual Long Island power provider, one of the monopolistic state-regulated utilities. "They're going to be held accountable," he said, citing lack of communication and preparation and even proposing they consider rebates instead of rate hikes.

A state report criticized LIPA in June for poor customer communications after Irene last year and for insufficient tree trimming. The Department of Public Service noted major problems in telling customers estimated power-restoration times, faulting its computer system, which a consultant had found deficient back in 2006.

LIPA acknowledged that customers aren't getting the information they need, partly because of the system, which it is updating. Authority officials said the new system will be operating next year.

"It is a huge computer system. After Irene we immediately accelerated that process, and even at that it is still an 18-month to two-year process," LIPA's chief operating officer, Michael Hervey, said Monday. "We would have liked to have had it up and running for now, but it's just such a large magnitude computer system that it takes that long."

Hervey said the company will be working with remaining customers over the next several weeks as they get their homes repaired. "They can't be safely re-energized from an electrical standpoint," he said. "We are ready to service those areas, but they are not ready to take it right now."

John Bruckner, president of National Grid Long Island transmission and distribution, said he had about 15,000 people working on restoration, including 6,400 linemen from all over the U.S. and Canada.

Matthew Cordaro, co-chairman of the Suffolk Legislature's LIPA Oversight Committee and a former utility executive, said Con Ed and Public Service Electric & Gas New Jersey did a good job responding to the storm, and LIPA didn't.

While a storm of that magnitude would challenge any electricity provider, he said LIPA is probably one of the most poorly run utilities and has a "crazy" public-private organizational structure that's fraught with problems and raises questions of accountability.

Who's Vulnerable Among the Internet's 'Fantastic Four'? Techonomy ...

Most of the discussion about ?the Internet?s Fantastic Four? at the Techonomy conference this afternoon focused on the ways Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google have come to dominate the online landscape. But the panelists were also asked to identify which of the companies seemed particularly vulnerable.

Alec Ellison, chairman of technology investment banking at Jefferies & Company, offered what was perhaps the most surprising answer (at least if you?re looking at market capitalization) ? Apple. Ellison said that Jeffries is ?bullish? on all four companies, but even before the vulnerability question came up, he criticized Apple, saying that of the group, Apple has the least ?stickiness? with consumers. In other words, Apple has to continue rolling out cool new products if it wants to keep its lead. Meanwhile, it would be much harder for a competitor to unseat Amazon, Facebook, or Google, even if they don?t offer any new innovations.

Apple?s stores could become a big weakness, too, Ellison said. Sure, they?re a ?tremendous advantage? now, but Ellison said IBM had a similar network of stores, which ?became an albatross in the ?90s.? To reinforce his point, he asked the audience if anyone had set foot in a Disney store recently, and no one raised their hands, but he said that that question would have gotten a very different answer?a decade ago. Apple could follow a similar pattern, Ellison argued. If its product momentum slows, the stores could become a big drain rather than an asset.

Mark Mahaney, formerly an analyst at Citi, argued that Facebook has a big question mark, too ? namely, CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Mahaney suggested that Techonomy?s David Kirkpatrick has spent more time with Zuckerberg than almost anyone. And that?s a bad thing, because it shows how ?not to many people really know this person.? Some of those questions are inevitable, Mahaney added, because you ?don?t really know how good these executives are for five or 10 years.?

He also argued that Facebook?s margins are too high, signaling that the company should go more into ?investment mode.? Mobile is one area where the company didn?t invest enough, Mahaney said ??Facebook took a long time to release an iPad app, and its mobile apps have had significant performance issues, supposedly because of the company?s bet on HTML5. Bad bets can happen to anyone, but Mahaney said, ?They didn?t make enough bets on mobile.?

The panel also covered the opportunities that these companies create and eliminate for startups. Mahaney spoke about the ?deep competitive moats? that each of the big four has around its business, making it very hard for anyone to take them on directly. He suggested that new companies will have a hard time building a broad social network, or a broad search engine, or a broad e-commerce site ? instead, the opportunities lie in focusing on specific niches or verticals.

Still, Mahaney predicted that another big online player will emerge in the next few years, and Ellison said it will probably be a company using ?a new technology that isn?t yet economic.? For example, Ellison noted that before early social network SixDegrees.com went bankrupt, the team was debating whether it can afford to let every member upload a profile picture. Obviously, that hasn?t been a problem at Facebook, whose growth has been enabled by rapidly falling storage costs.

Dumb home turns smart with change of lightbulbs

23 hrs.

Home automation???the ability to control every aspect of your home's daily operation, from the dishwasher that turns itself on after you've left for work to a heater that warms up the house before you wake up???hasn't caught on. Too many competing standards. Too much fiddling with settings. But the new Philips Hue LED light bulbs could finally flip the switch for American homeowners by tying them to something they already love: their smartphones.

Surely you've heard of LED light bulbs. They're expensive, compared to incandescents or compact fluorescents, but prices are dropping rapidly. LED bulbs are projected to last 10 to 20 years, consume power at one-fifth the rate of an incandescent and about half that?of a CFL bulb, and aren't?environmentally hazardous when they do eventually fail.?Add to that a quality of white light that doesn't seem unnatural and it becomes clear why some people are willing to consider a $25 light bulb as?an investment.

Philips is already a leader in the LED bulb market, although competitors are manifold. (One standout, Switch, is working to launch 100-watt-equivalent LED bulbs based on innovations so clever the bulbs were featured the cover of Wired magazine.) Philips itself are so proud of winning the U.S. Department of Energy's "Lighting Prize" competition to produce a high-lumen, low-consumption model that the company just named the new bulbs, which went on sale earlier this year, the "L-Prize."

But those are all dumb bulbs. What about a smart bulb? A bulb you can control from your phone? One that can turn any color of the rainbow (provided your rainbow is mostly woven of muted pastels and bright whites)? That's the pitch behind the Hue, a three-bulb set that is bundled with a special router that plugs into your phone network. Flipping a switch is so pass? when you can hit a button on your smartphone's screen labeled "Beach" or "Taj Mahal."

There's no doubt the Hue is fun. And for $200 for three light bulbs, it better be. (Philips isn't selling Hue-compatible single bulbs outside of the starter kit yet.)?While home automation systems have existed for over a decade that allow lights to be controlled by phones, remote controls, or even applications that can be remotely accessed from the Internet, there's a simplicity to the Hue's setup that shouldn't be ignored:

1)?Screw in the bulbs.

2)?Plug in the router.

3)?Download the Hue control app from the App Store or Android Market.

4)?Pair your phone to the router by pressing a physical button on its top.

5)?Start annoying your neighbors by making your windows look like you've opened up a nightclub,?while you figure out exactly what shades of purple or mauve you like best.

One word of warning: After spending a couple of days with the Hue, you'll start being very disappointed in all the other lights you have in your home that aren't able to be controlled by your phone. And you might find yourself telling your girlfriend to get up out of bed in the evening and go turn the lights back on, just so you can hit the "ALL OFF" button on your phone. She may or may not be impressed.

The Hue's software is sparse, but more than functional. Each of the three bundled bulbs can be controlled individually, each turned to the color and brightness level of your choice.?Profiles can be saved for calling up color combinations later. I found the two dozen or so default combinations plenty useful, especially the "Energize" and "Concentrate" settings that are a mix of primarily white and yellow lighting. A third combination, labeled "Relax," went well with evening television watching.

You can use the Hue bulbs without the smartphone app, as well. Simply flipping a standard light?switch turns the bulbs on to a default white. Dimmer switches are supported in theory, but some customers have found problems with older ones.

One spiffy addition made possible with the smartphone app is a function that lets you snap a picture with your phone's camera, then match the colors of the lights to colors in the photo. Doing this, you can easily sync up the lights with your decor ??or even a particular outfit.

It's also easy to set up a schedule for the lights to turn on or off, including three- or nine-minute fades. A lamp I've left in my apartment's bedroom now turns on in the morning with a slow, gentle yellow, then transitions an hour later into a brighter white for working. At 5:30, it fades into "Sunset." (It would be very neat???and very possible with a future software upgrade???to have the lights track the changing times of sunset and sunrise in your town, then sync up home lighting to the rise and fall of the sun.)

You can even log into Philips MeetHue.com?website to remotely control your lights from home, should you want to give the appearance of activity to thwart burglars or slowly convince your spouse they're having a stroke. Users can upload color combinations to share with others Hue users.

Philips' engineers are working on improving the software, as well. One particularly exciting function scheduled for the next month or two is "geofencing" support, which will let your phone tell your lights when you're about to be home, so that they can brighten up just?before you walk in the door. Remote monitoring is also planned, so that you can tell whether or not individual lights are on at home. (It's all or nothing for now.)

And because the Hue is based on the open ZigBee Light Link standard and uses standard internet protocols for control, some hackers have already figured out how to control the bulbs without the official Hue software.

In all, the Hue is a great first experience with home automation. And the ability to change the color of your interior lighting is more than a gimmick. It's easy to discount the effect that your home lighting ? even the color ??has on your mood, as well as its ability to serve as a quick and flexible decor remixer. (It's certainly easier to hit a button than it is to repaint a wall.)

The Hue is expensive compared to other light bulbs, and it doesn't come with the full RGB spectrum or hackability of other bulbs like the LIFX, but its true cost may come after you've bought the starter kit and realized that three bulbs might not be enough.

Philips Hue is currently available exclusively through Apple stores. $200 for the starter kit with necessary wireless bridge; $60 for each additional bulb.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks slid on Wall Street Thursday, a day after the Dow Jones industrial average logged its biggest one-day drop of the year, as investors fretted about the potential for gridlock in Washington.

The Dow closed down 121.41 points to 12,811.32, bringing its two-day loss to 434 points. The Standard and Poor's 500 index fell 17.02 points to 1,377.51 and the Nasdaq composite slipped 41.71 to 2,895.58.

The Dow plunged 313 points Wednesday, its fifth worst one-day drop following a U.S. presidential election. The biggest, in 2008, came in the midst of the financial crisis on the day after President Barack Obama won his first term.

The two-day slump came in the wake of Obama's re-election to a second term as investors turned their focus back to Europe's problems and the so-called fiscal cliff, a package of tax increases and government spending cuts in the U.S. that will occur unless Congress acts by Jan. 1. Investors see it as a serious threat to the economic recovery.

"The thinking before the election was that it would remove some of the uncertainty, but it seems to have done the opposite," said Tyler Vernon, chief investment officer at Biltmore Capital Advisors in Princeton, N.J.

Stocks are still up on the year, but well below the peak they reached in September. That was when the Federal Reserve announced a third round of its bond-buying program, which is intended to hold down borrowing costs and encourage lending.

The S&P 500 is 6 percent below its high close of the year, 1,465, which it reached on Sept. 14. That was its highest level in nearly five years. It's still up 10 percent for the year.

Investors may be tempted to sell appreciated stock before a possible increase in the capital gains tax at the end of the year, Vernon said. Tax cuts enacted by President George W. Bush expire at the end of this year and the U.S. government wants to cut a $1 trillion budget deficit.

"The mood of the market has certainly switched," said J.J. Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade, as investors monitor developments on the fiscal cliff and wait for more clues about Obama's agenda.

Investors were encouraged by two reports on the U.S. economy that came out before the market opened. The Dow climbed as much as 48 points in the morning but started to sink after the first hour of trading.

The Dow fell steadily throughout the rest of the day, and more steeply in the last hour of trading. The Dow gave up 73 points in the last 40 minutes, accounting for more than half the day's loss.

The Labor Department reported that the number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell 8,000 last week to 355,000, a possible sign that the job market is healing. Officials cautioned that the figures were distorted by Superstorm Sandy.

A separate report showed that the U.S. trade deficit narrowed to its lowest level in almost two years as exports rose to a record high.

There was also encouraging news from Europe, where leaders shocked markets a day earlier with a dire forecast for economic growth next year.

European Central Bank head Mario Draghi said financial market confidence "has visibly improved" as the 17-country group that uses the euro struggles with its debt crisis. But he said the outlook for the economy remains "weak." Draghi spoke after the bank's governing council left its key interest rate unchanged at 0.75 percent.

The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, on Wednesday slashed its outlook for growth for this year and 2013. The report helped set off a sharp decline in stocks in the U.S and Europe.

Spain's government said that it had met its financing needs for the year after raising the equivalent of $6.07 billion in a series of bond auctions on Thursday. Spain became the focal point of the European debt crisis earlier this year amid concern that it would struggle to refinance its debt at affordable rates.

Among stocks making big moves:

? Energy drink maker Monster Beverage sank 57 cents to $44.40 after the company said its revenue growth slowed in the third quarter.

? Kayak Software surged in after-hours trading, gaining $8.14 to $39.18, after the travel website agreed to be bought by Priceline.com for $40 a share.

? Burger chain Wendy's rose 13 cents to $4.39 after the company said that a key sales figure rose. Revenue at restaurants open at least 15 months rose 2.7 percent, the sixth straight quarter of growth.

? CBS rose 36 cents to $34.36 after the company said that earnings rose 16 percent as falling ad revenue was offset by higher fees from pay TV distributors.

In Sweet Tooth, a writer writes a story about a man who falls in love with a mannequin and brings her home ... In Sweet Tooth, a writer writes a story about a man who falls in love with a mannequin and brings her home ...?

WARNING: This essay reveals a major twist in Ian McEwan's Sweet Tooth. You?ll get another warning right before the spoiler.

There is no shortage of excellent, richly imagined books about female protagonists written by male novelists (think of Gustav Flaubert?s Madame Bovary?or Henry James? Portrait of a Lady, or Norman Rush?s Mating, or Ian McEwan?s Atonement), but there are very few instances of male novelists writing about writing about female protagonists.

In Ian McEwan?s tricky and captivating new novel Sweet Tooth, he takes as his complex subject the male writer entering a woman?s consciousness (or it might be more accurate in this case to say breaking and entering a woman?s consciousness).

From the start, one feels a certain uneasiness about his central character. Serena Frome, a low-level spy for MI5, is a little pliant, a little silly, a little bland, a little light on actual interest in her work, which she accidentally falls into because of a man, and remains engaged in because of other men; with her ?summer blue eyes? and ?old fashioned peaches and cream look? she is a creature of romantic attachment and nice hair. She is not exciting or daring or complicated in the way that we are accustomed to our female heroines being exciting or daring or complicated. And even with her unusual career, there is some element of independence or defiance or spark that is missing. So who is Serena Frome, the reader can?t help but feel, and why are we reading about her?

Serena deceives her central romantic interest, the rising young novelist Tom Haley, by not revealing that she is a spy and that she has recruited him for a foundation funded by her agency, but her great deception is less a deception than a sort of girlish mistake, a fear of losing him, a missing of the moment. As she says of herself when she was young, ?I was a girl with untutored tastes, I was an empty mind, ripe for a takeover,? and she doesn?t noticeably appear to grow out of those qualities. In short, one feels the character is a little thin to sustain a book-length inquiry into her life and times. And yet, it turns out McEwan is skewering, relentlessly examining and exposing this thinness, this fantasy of female consciousness for what it is?a man?s.

Tom Haley?s subterranean feelings or ideas about women are illuminated in the intriguing glimpses we get of the stories he writes, short stories which in their jewel-like darkness and thematic precision bear a striking resemblance to early McEwan (See his 1978 collection, In Between the Sheets.) They are all unsettling commentaries on the perversion of fantasy, the frightening dominion of a man?s idea of a woman over anything resembling her self, the alarming deceptions and self-deceptions of love.

Haley writes, for instance, about a man who falls passionately in love with a department-store mannequin and brings her home and sleeps with her, and then gets so jealous of an imagined affair she is having with his housekeeper that he dismantles her and tears her limbs off: ?Her crime was his reckless empowerment. He tore into her with all the savagery of disappointed love, and his fingers were round her throat as she came, as they both came. And when he was done, her arms and legs and head had parted company with her torso, which he dashed against the bedroom wall. She lay in all corners, a ruined woman.?

The reader longs to read the whole story, rather than the tantalizing snatches we are given, but we do get to read the ending, which is simultaneously weird, uplifting, and alarming. ?Though he, an ordinary fellow, had discovered for himself the awesome power of the imagination, he tried not to think of what had happened. He decided to banish the affair utterly, and such is the efficiency of the compartmentalized mind, he succeeded. He forgot all about her. And he never lived so intensely again.?

There is a moment of revelation (and you should stop reading here, if you don?t want to know what it is) when McEwan tears the meta-fabric of the novel: He reveals that Tom Haley has been writing Serena?s story all along, which is very satisfying (rather than slightly maddening as these things can sometimes be) because the mind game is so elegantly contrived, because it snaps into focus suddenly, this flimsy, fragile idea of what the perfect or ideal woman is, this ur-companion to the smart and sensitive man. We see, suddenly, what we have been reading all along, which is that this pliant, lovely, spirited, slightly vacant woman is a man?s fantasy of a woman. The troubling and slightly uncomfortable puzzle of the novel is solved. Serena is, in certain important ways, the department-store mannequin.

Despite superstorm Sandy, NYU dental volunteers will staff Down ...

MACHIAS, Maine ? The lower east side of New York City has been without power after superstorm Sandy, but that hasn?t pulled the plug on efforts by the New York University College of Dentistry?s Henry Schein Cares Global Student Outreach Program to be in the Washington County community of Machias throughout this week.

NYU faculty dentists and dental students who headed to Maine over the weekend spent much of last week ? in the dark, many wearing headlamps ? packing up the supplies they will use to provide free dental care to children and adults, beginning Monday, Nov. 5, at Lee Pellon Event Center at 90 Main Street.

?They?ve been packing up in buildings that have no power,? said Jen Wood, who is coordinating the free clinic for the Washington County Children?s Program, a division of United Cerebral Palsy of Maine. ?Some of the supplies they will need were already shipped to us before the storm, but they are bringing the rest with them.?

Wood said only three of the 33 people expected to come to Down East Maine to staff the clinic are unable to make the trip, given the fallout from Hurricane Sandy. Working with local volunteers, they will be offering free dental care most of this week.

On Monday and Tuesday, the clinic will run from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. On Wednesday hours will be extended to 6:30 p.m. The clinic will be closed Thursday, but will be open again from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday.

Routine dental services for children will include examinations, X-rays, fluoride varnish, sealants, fillings, extractions and stainless steel crowns. Emergency adult services include examinations, X-rays, sealants, fillings and root canals.

The clinics are designed to provide dental care to those who have limited access to dental health providers. Since the clinics began two years ago, they have meet the needs of more than 3,000 children and adults.

I think I should explain the DITE customizing system. Depending on what kind of dite you pick will determine the strengths of your weapon and ultimately how your character evolves battlewise. certain dites are better suited for certain areas of warfare. Some dites will be more suited for physical oriented characters,n-neni users, speedsters, kei users or some combination of the above mentioned. Adamant dite works as a fusion of two types of DITEs like chrome+ruby or sapphire+platnium. The power of adamant dites can by found by averaging the stats of the two dites used in its construction.

While not as strong as each individually , it possess qualities of both making them quite useful. Each Dite will have a value for Kei Power and Attack Power. Whether your dite is an axe type or staff type doesn't matter in terms of performances. All weapon types have the same potential, what does matter is what type of DITE you choose to construct that weapon type. Attack power works as a modifier for physical based attacks, whearas Kei power determines the relative power of Kei-based attacks. Weapon types can be upgraded at the weapon's store provided you have the necessary funds. Each weapon has 10 possible upgrades and one master upgrade that requires a special item that can only be acquired as an item drop from a rare contamanoid.

I'll list the base and max stats for each dite type.
