Productivity Busters: How to Do More in Less Time | Business 2 ...

Productivity levels suffer when you allow things to distract you from your task at hand. Discover these great productivity busters and how you can make adjustments to do more in less time.

Lacking a Plan

Image via Flickr by One Pretty Thing

Time Buster: You plan your day at the start of each day. You spend the first 20 to 30 minutes trying to collect your thoughts before you can even start your work.

Solution: The night before, spend 10 to 15 minutes mapping out your plan for the following day. Make a list, schedule time into your calendar or create some kind of road map that you can follow. Prioritize these items and then use the list to hit the ground running when you return to the office the next morning.

Checking Email

Image via Flickr by Jon Gosier

Time Buster: People have a tendency to pull up their email on their laptops for business and constantly check it on their cell phone. Constantly checking, reading, responding to and sending emails is a huge draw down on your time. A few minutes here and 20 seconds there adds up to hours of your time by the end of the day.

Solution: Check your email three times a day. Schedule it into your calendar as if it?s an appointment. Allot some time in the morning, at lunch and before quitting time.

Texting

Image via Flickr by Joi

Time Buster: Similar to email, constant texting is a similar time drain. When you hear the text message signal come in on your phone, it?s natural to grab it, read it and respond to it right then and there.

Solution: Turn your text message signal off while you are working or focusing on a project. Schedule time in your day to read and respond to text messages?maybe even the same schedule for emails so manage all electronic communication at once.

Social Networking

Image via Flickr by xericjames

Time Buster: You constantly have your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Reddit up on your computer. ?You post status updates, check-in with friends and share that cute puppy picture. A few minutes here and there ends up being hours of time that you are not focusing on getting things done.

Solution: Register for a site that allows you to manage social networking sites in one place (such as TweetDeck or Hootsuite). This allows you to read, respond and manage your social networks at one time. Additionally, check the site only once or twice a day.

Multi-tasking

Image via Flickr by balusss

Time Buster: Conducting several different tasks at once?emailing, talking on the phone and flipping over to work on writing a Word document? seems productive. Wrong! The time it takes to switch and refocus each time you switch ends up taking more time than if you focus on one thing at a time.

Solution: Schedule and focus on one task at a time. When you reach a stopping point or the stopping time allotted for that project, then move on to the next project or task. This allows you to focus your time and efforts on what?s in front of you without any distractions.

Identify the tasks and behaviors that are eating up your time, so you can stop it. You?ll have more free time and be more productive than ever before.

Firefighters? international union censures Wichita fire chief

The international union for firefighters has adopted a resolution to censure Wichita Fire Chief Ron Blackwell.

That?s according to a news release e-mailed to the Eagle on Saturday by Matthew Jackson, president of a local firefighters union in Junction City and secretary of the Kansas State Council of Fire Fighters.

Delegates at the International Association of Fire Fighters? Convention in Philadelphia in late July unanimously adopted a censure resolution against Blackwell for his actions against Wichita Fire Fighters Local 135. The censure was based on an IAFF resolution that said, among other things, that Blackwell risked public and firefighter safety by reducing front-line staffing, repeatedly violated the union?s collective bargaining agreement with the city and gave double-digit raises to department managers.

?The union will not tolerate injustice at the hands of any mayor or fire chief, and the 300,000 men and women of this great union are proud to offer this censure on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Wichita,? said IAFF general president Harold Schaitberger, in the release.

Blackwell said Saturday that he was unhappy about the resolution but said it would not take his focus off the department?s mission.

?The censure resolution is disappointing and unfortunate,? Blackwell said. ?My management team and I work on a daily basis with some of the best firefighters anywhere, and we?ll continue to provide the high level of service our community deserves and has come to expect.?

The IAFF censure follows calls by members of Local 135 in April for Blackwell?s resignation and the resignation of Deputy Chief Ron Aaron and Division Chief Billy Wenzel over the raises and cutbacks in service.

Local 135 members in April also approved a vote of no confidence in Blackwell.

Matt Schulte, Local 135 president, told The Eagle at the time that the union vote ?has no teeth,? but ?it needed to be said.?

Delegates at the Philadelphia convention also adopted resolutions censuring Mayor Arthur Ward of Bristol, Conn., and Fire Chief Bruce Burrell of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Filmmaker seeks hundreds of extras for coronation scene at vacant ...

LEWISTON, Maine ? Almost three years after St. Patrick?s Church closed its doors, the vacant downtown building will host a coronation.

The makers of ?Richard 3? ? a movie comedy of Shakespeare?s scheming, humpbacked King Richard III ? aims to pack hundreds of extras into the former Catholic church for the key scene.

?It will be the biggest scene we?ve tried since shooting began,? said Michael Miclon, the Buckfield entertainer who began shooting Aug. 1. He wrote, directed and stars in the low-budget film.

He has about 200 people signed on to fill the century-old structure overlooking Kennedy Park in downtown Lewiston. He wants more.

?Ideally, I?d like to have about 800 people,? Miclon said.

Anyone wishing to sign on is invited to send a message to extras@boodogfilms.com.

People who express an interest will be sent a questionnaire to fill out concerning costumes. In some cases, people will be outfitted from head to foot. Along with the emailed form, people will be given information about the Wednesday evening shoot and what to expect.

Filming is scheduled to begin around 5 p.m. and will likely last three or four hours.

Anyone who signs on ought to be prepared for movie production?s hurry-up-and-wait pace.

However, Miclon hopes to make it as pleasant as possible. Performers will entertain the crowd between takes and light snacks will be available. The first-time director also is trying to keep the workload light.

?We want to keep it simple,? he said. ?It?ll be sitting and standing and cheering and then they go home.?

Originally, Miclon had hoped to shoot the coronation in the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. He was given permission by the church, but it was withdrawn when local church leaders discovered that such a use would violate rules.

It was a blow, but church officials offered up St. Patrick?s as an alternative.

The basilica?s scale and grandeur would have looked impressive on screen, Miclon said. However, it would have looked anemic with a small crowd.

?St. Patrick?s is still a beautiful church and it?s still got enough grandeur,? Miclon said.

So far, the movie production has gone well, he said.

Since shooting began last week, he has filmed at Fort Popham in Phippsburg and at several locations in Buckfield, including the Oddfellow Theater. Miclon, who founded the theater, adapted the movie script from a play he first produced on its stage.

He has been consistently impressed by the actors and crew, he said.

?It is actually exceeding my expectations, and I had really high expectations,? he said. ?We?ve been getting amazing stuff.?

Plans call for shooting to last about 30 days in total. Then he?ll begin editing with his co-editor and director of photography, Jay Childs.

The pair plans to submit the finished movie to the Sundance Film Festival.

Governments mull seizing mortgages

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

A house for sale is pictured in Fontana, San Bernardino County, California, in this 2009 file photograph. A mortgage firm backed by a number of prominent West Coast financiers is pushing local politicians in California and a handful of other states hardest hit by the housing crisis to use eminent domain to restructure mortgages for borrowers who owe more money than their homes are worth.

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

With millions of homeowners still underwater, some local governments are considering a novel solution: condemning their mortgages through the power of eminent domain.

?Federal programs have not been very successful at all, and the private programs have been of limited help,? said Gregory Devereaux, administrator for San Bernardino County, explaining the government's decision to consider eminent domain, a plan the mortgage industry considers the equivalent of the nuclear option. The hard-hit county's board of supervisors is expected to meet Thursday to consider proposals to help homeowners, including the possible use of eminent domain.

There are several ways a local government could use eminent domain to write down mortgages, but the basic idea is fairly simple. Much like the condemnation of a piece of land for public use, the town or county would seek court approval to pay a ?fair market? value to a lender or investor holding a homeowner?s underwater mortgage. That amount would be substantially less than the unpaid balance. Once the seizure is approved, the local government would then offer to sell the smaller mortgage back to the homeowner, who would refinance the outstanding balance with a new loan.

Not surprisingly the idea has struck a deep nerve in the mortgage finance industry.

?It?s absolutely a reflection of frustration, but that doesn?t mean it?s right and it doesn?t mean it?s responsible,? said David Stevens, president of the Mortgage Bankers Association. ?In cities or counties where they pass ordinances to do this they?re going to make credit availability extremely limited. And that?s just going to hurt recovery of those communities much greater than families that would be helped.?

The idea has also drawn the ire of the Federal Housing Finance Authority, the regulator of government mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which last week threatened unspecified action to stop local governments from seizing underwater homes through eminent domain. Together, those government enterprises hold or guarantee roughly half of all mortgages outstanding.

Despite pressure from the White House and more than 100 members of Congress, FHFA acting Director Edward DeMarco recently repeated his opposition to the idea of writing down the balances of some mortgages held in the government?s portfolio. That policy only further demonstrates the need to attack the problem on a local level, say proponents of the eminent domain idea.

?It almost doesn?t matter what the federal government comes up with -- if they?re not going to allow it, they?re not going to allow it,? said Robert Hockett, a Cornell University law professor who has written in support of the plan. ?We?d love to see an FHFA with a different attitude toward principal write-downs. We?d love to see a different head of FHFA if that?s what it takes.?

San Bernardino, a sprawling county east of Los Angeles, twice the size of Massachusetts, has been hit hard by the housing bust. The county unemployment rate stood at 12.6 percent June, one of the highest in the nation. Median home prices have fallen to $150,000 from a peak of $370,000.?The foreclosure rate is among the highest in the country.?With its tax base badly eroded, the city of San Bernardino recently filed for municipal bankruptcy?after disclosing a $46 million budget shortfall.?

?Our issue is not the individual homeowner,? said Devereaux, the county administrator. ?Our issue is our economy. And what is the moral rightness of keeping these people underwater and keeping our unemployment rate high because we can?t get the housing market going again??

The idea is being discussed in other municipalities, although it has not gotten far. In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel this week shot down the idea, saying eminent domain is the wrong tool to address housing problems, which he described as a national issue.

The well-established power of eminent domain has traditionally been applied more narrowly to claim property for new roads or facilities that at least arguably benefit the entire community. Critics say seizing individual properties would benefit only the homeowners who gets a break on their loan balance.

But proponents counter that local mortgage seizures would serve the public good because they would help boost local housing markets and speed economic recovery.

?They?re using their power for the public good to improve the quality of life and services for their residents," said Steven Gluckstern, a principal in Mortgage Resolution Partners, a newly formed private company that is promoting the eminent domain plan. ?It?s a taking. It?s a tough word. It's a local community saying, ?I can?t stand by and watch the continued degradation of my community so I?m just going to take the loan.?"

The San Francisco-based company?is in talks with about a half-dozen local governments about setting up mortgage condemnation programs, Gluckstern said. The company would manage the program and help homeowners refinance their mortgages in exchange for a $4,500 fee for each modified loan.

It is not clear whether efforts to use eminent domain in this way would pass legal muster. Each case would have to be approved by a judge, as is true in every eminent domain case.

"In eminent domain, (the local government) sues the investors: that?s how it starts," Gluckstern said. ?They have only two claims: one is that you don?t have right to do this and the other is that you?re not paying me fair value. Those two issues are part of any eminent domain case."

The FHFA has concerns about the use of eminent domain to revise existing financial contracts. With Steven Gluckstern, Mortgage Resolution Partners, and Tom Deutsch, American Securitization Forum.

It also?remains to be seen who would be the winners and losers if these plans move forward. Underwater homeowners certainly come out ahead. Depending on how the loans are valued, investors holding these mortgages could also benefit in the long run.

Proponents of mortgage write-downs argue that underwater homeowners are at much greater risk of default, which leaves lenders and investors with potentially big losses. That?s why banks holding underwater loans commonly decide to cut the outstanding balance to keep the loan performing and avoid the losses that stem from a foreclosure.?

But many underwater mortgages written during the 2000s lending boom were pooled into trusts and sold off to investors. The complex contracts governing those trusts have severely limited investors? ability to modify a loan -? even when it?s in their best interest.

?These contracts are effectively functioning as suicide pacts among bondholders,? said Hockett, the Cornell professor. ?They?re preventing something from happening that would be good for the bondholders themselves."

By looking at the default rates of underwater borrowers, banks holding loans outright have come up with formulas to decide how far they can write down a mortgage and still come out ahead in the long run. In theory, the same should hold for mortgages held in trusts, according to Laurie Goodman, an analyst at Amherst Securities who recently analyzed the potential impact of eminent domain mortgage write-downs.

?Taking select loans out of a trust could conceivably result in a higher realized value for (the) investors,? she wrote. ?Using eminent domain is a novel (albeit aggressive) idea to reach this goal.?

But the same trust contracts that have impeded investors from writing down loans also leave them with little protection from a local government that offers less than fair value when it seizes mortgages, she wrote.

Opponents of the eminent domain idea -- and of write-downs in general -- inevitably raise the issue of ?moral hazard.? Cutting the loan balance of a troubled homeowner will only encourage future borrowers to take on debts they can?t pay back, according to this argument.

Both public and private efforts at loan modification have been bogged down from the start by the difficulty in identifying which homeowners should be helped and which should be left to fend for themselves.

?It?s easy as an outsider to say the (Obama) administration that should have done more,? said Stevens, a former FHA official. ?But how do you implement a program and not sweep in irresponsible behaviors with responsible ones??

Should governments use eminent domain if needed to resolve housing problems?

Another Afghan police attack kills 2 US troops

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A newly recruited Afghan village policeman opened fire on his American allies on Friday, killing two U.S. service members minutes after they handed him his official weapon in an inauguration ceremony. It was the latest in a disturbing string of attacks by Afghan security forces on the international troops training them.

Later Friday, an Afghan soldier turned his gun on foreign troops in another part of the country and wounded two of them, a spokesman for the NATO coalition said.

The attacks in the country's far west and south brought to seven the number of times that a member of the Afghan security forces ? or someone wearing their uniform ? has opened fire on international forces in the past two weeks.

Such assaults by allies, virtually unheard of just a few years ago, have recently escalated, killing at least 36 foreign troops so far this year. They also raise questions about the strategy to train Afghan national police and soldiers to take over security and fight insurgents after most foreign troops leave the country by the end of 2014.

The NATO-led coalition has said such attacks are anomalies stemming from personal disputes, but the supreme leader of the Taliban boasted on Thursday night that the insurgents are infiltrating the quickly expanding Afghan forces.

Friday's deadly attacker in the far western province of Farah was identified as Mohammad Ismail, a man in his 30s who had joined the Afghan Local Police just five days ago.

He opened fire during an inauguration ceremony attended by American and Afghan forces in the Kinisk village, the Farah provincial police chief Agha Noor Kemtoz said.

"As soon as they gave the weapon to Ismail to begin training, suddenly he took the gun and opened fire toward the U.S. soldiers," Kemtoz said.

Ismail was shot and killed as the coalition and Afghan forces returned fire, the police chief said.

A spokesman for the international coalition force, Jamie Graybeal, confirmed that two American service members were killed Friday by a member of the Afghan Local Police.

The ALP is different from the national police and represents a village defense force under the Ministry of Interior that is being trained by international forces, including U.S. special forces.

Graybeal gave no other details on the Farah attack other than confirming the shooter had been killed.

Kemtoz, the police chief, said the attack took place about 8 a.m., after the U.S. forces arrived in the village to train the local police. He said one Afghan National Police officer was also seriously wounded in the shooting.

Later Friday, an Afghan army soldier fired on coalition troops in the southern province of Kandahar. Two of the international troops were wounded but none was killed in that shooting, Graybeal said. He added that the soldier was shot and died later Friday of his wounds.

So far in 2012, there have been 29 attacks reported on foreign troops by Afghans they are training, compared to 11 attacks in 2011, according to an Associated Press count, and five attacks in each of the previous two years.

Seven such attacks have come in the past two weeks alone, with six American troops killed last Friday in two separate shootings in Helmand province in the south and another American killed a few days previously on a U.S. base in Paktia province in the east.

The trend raises questions about potential resentment by Afghans after more than a decade of international presence since the American-led intervention to oust the Taliban regime from power for harboring the al-Qaida terrorist leadership after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the U.S. The insider attacks also renew concern that insurgents may be infiltrating the Afghan army and police, despite intensified screening.

Insurgent infiltration or recruitment was behind only about 10 percent of this year's reported attacks on coalition forces by Afghan allies, Graybeal said earlier this week, citing investigations into attacks before those of the past week.

Graybeal insisted the deadly violence is relatively small scale compared to the nearly 340,000 Afghan security forces now being trained.

The international coalition has said that Afghan forces are increasingly able to lead operations and already have started to assume responsibility for security in areas of the country that are home to 75 percent of the Afghan population.

However, the Taliban have been quick to seize on the increasing number of attacks as a sign of Afghan rejection of foreign forces and the insurgents' own successful recruitment.

The group's supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar said Thursday night that the insurgents "have cleverly infiltrated in the ranks of the enemy" and were successfully killing a rising number of U.S.-led coalition forces.

In an email to media organizations, Omar said the plan to transfer responsibility to Afghan forces by the end of 2014 is a "deceiving drama" that the international community has orchestrated to hide its defeat.

The Taliban leader's message came on the same day that a U.S. military helicopter crashed during a firefight with insurgents in a remote area of southern Afghanistan, killing seven Americans and four Afghans in one of the deadliest air disasters of a war now into its second decade.

The Taliban claimed they gunned down the Black Hawk.

To freeze them, blanch in hot water to remove the skins and store in freezer-safe plastic containers. Make sure to leave an inch of room at the top to allow for expansion. Artichokes promote the flow of bile to the liver. This helps break down rich, fatty foods. Eat them fresh, canned or frozen.Chile Peppers have up to 6 times as much vitamin C in them as oranges, along with plenty of vitamins A and B. Capsicum reduces pain and stimulates circulation.

Fruits like blueberries and strawberries keep their antioxidant qualities even when frozen. Frozen fruit is frequently better than imported, fresh fruit. Frozen fruit is picked at the peak of ripeness, instead of early so that it survives travel. You can use frozen berries in smoothies, pancakes, and muffins. The juice and zest from lemons, limes, and oranges has the added benefit of enhancing digestive energy, relieving intestinal gas and swelling, and decongestant the lungs.

Herbs and Spices

When you do not have fresh herbs, having dried Oregano, Parsley or Dill on hand will enhance the flavour of many meals. Dried herbs should be replaced every 5 to 6 months to ensure that they are still potent. In spring and summer, aromatic bouquets of Basil, Dill, Rosemary, Thyme, and Oregano seem to be ever where. Growing your own herbs indoors is very rewarding. Parsley enriches any soup stock or stew recipe. It relieves bad breath when it is chewed after a garlicky meal. Mint will balance a spicy meal. Have fresh cilantro in home made salsa or as a salad green. Cilantro in a sauce with shallots, ginger and chilies goes great on salmon.

Ginger is really good for your digestion and immune system. You can steep slices of ginger in hot water to make a reviving tea.Paprika is an anti-inflammatory and is great in barbecue sauce. Saffron is a heart healthy antioxidant that adds a unique flavour to dishes. Curry dishes are a great way to increase your spice intake. UN panel concludes war crimes perpetrated in Syria

GENEVA (AP) ? The U.N. on Wednesday said for the first time that Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces and rebels have perpetrated war crimes, in a highly anticipated report that spells out clear responsibility for attacks on civilians and that could be used in possible prosecutions against the leader and others.

It also contained an ominous warning that Syria's 17-month-old civil war was moving in "brutal" directions on all fronts as Assad's forces step up air assaults and anti-government armed groups seek stronger firepower to fight back.

The panel appointed by the 47-nation Human Rights Council blamed the government and pro-government shabiha militia for the killing of more than 100 civilians in Houla in May and said the murders, unlawful killing, torture, sexual violence and indiscriminate attacks "indicate the involvement at the highest levels of the armed and security forces and the government."

According to the final report to the Geneva-based council, the squads poured into the village of Houla on foot and in vehicles: cars, minivans, pickups mounted with machine guns. At the end, dozens were dead ? nearly half of them children In one village site where some 60 people were killed, the commission found through satellite imagery and corroborated accounts that "the movement of vehicles or weapons, as well as the size of the group, would have been easily detectable by government forces" but the place was inaccessible for any "sizeable" anti-government armed group.

The panel concluded that anti-government armed groups committed war crimes, including murder, extrajudicial killings and torture, but at a lesser frequency and scale.

A confidential list of people and armed units believed to be responsible for crimes against humanity, breaches of international humanitarian law and gross human rights violations is to be submitted to the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay in September.

In its use of the term "war crimes" to describe its findings, the panel relies on an assessment of Syria by the International Committee of the Red Cross in mid-July. The Geneva-based ICRC, which oversees the Geneva Conventions known as the rules of war, said it now considers the conflict in Syria to be a full-blown civil war, meaning international humanitarian law applies throughout the country.

That assessment was an important reference for the panel and for all others trying to determine how much and what type of force can be used. It forms the basis for war crimes prosecutions, especially if civilians are attacked or detained enemies are abused or killed. Until then, everything had to be considered "a violation or an abuse," said Karen Koning AbuZayd, one of the panel members.

"The international community must come to some kind of consensus to stop the violence in the first place and then eventually hold people accountable for it," AbuZayd, a U.S. citizen and former head of UNRWA, the U.N. agency that aids Palestinian refugees, told The Associated Press.

Syria had previously won her respect, she said, because of the excellent care it provided to Palestinian refugees during her past decade of work there.

"For me, everything is pretty shocking. For these things to be happening in Syria ... It's pretty painful, I must say, to see what is happening to the country and how all sides are behaving, really," she added.

The panel's 102-page report was issued just hours after a bomb exploded in the Syrian capital of Damascus outside a hotel where U.N. observers are staying. The bomb was attached to a fuel truck and wounded at least three people, Syrian state TV reported. Activists also reported fighting near the government headquarters and the Iranian embassy, both in Damascus, along with clashes in different parts of Syria.

The panel was appointed to probe abuses in Syria but had hardly any access to the country, with only its chairman, Brazilian diplomat and professor Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, allowed into Damascus for a weekend visit last month to meet with some top government officials and families affected by the violence. A third panel member had dropped out.

Most of the report, which covers the period between Feb. 15 and July 20, was conducted during field interviews and in Geneva with Syrian refugees outside the country. It is based on 1,062 interviews, but the panel emphasized that the investigation was hampered by the Assad regime's unwillingness to cooperate.

Their report, whose findings are strikingly more conclusive about the Houla massacre than previous interim findings, could be used by world powers to justify tougher outside action against Syria, or strengthen calls for an international investigation and prosecution of possible war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The panel recommends that the president of the Human Rights Council forward the report to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who could bring it to the attention of the most powerful arm of the U.N., the Security Council based in New York. Earlier this year, the council said in a resolution that it agreed with Pillay, the U.N.'s top human rights official, in her call for action by the International Criminal Court based at The Hague.

But Russia and China, two of the five veto-wielding permanent members on that 15-nation council, have effectively blocked major powers from responding in a coordinated fashion to the Syria crisis, a stalemate cited by the U.N.-Arab League special envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, in deciding to resign from his post at the end of this month.

The Human Rights Council also could extend the mandate of its special panel on Syria so that it can investigate further. But even if it doesn't, Pinheiro would continue to work in essentially the same role for the council as its special rapporteur for Syria, a position that was created in March.

Activists say more than 20,000 people have been killed since the start of Syria's revolt, inspired by other Arab Spring uprisings against autocratic regimes in the region. The conflict has slowly changed into a full blown civil war that the panel says involves "more brutal tactics and new military capabilities on both sides."

Julie Delpy 2 Days in New York Interview

"So, Ethan Hawke said I was crazy in an interview," filmmaker Julie Delpy says to a PR person. "I'm going to bust his little balls."

It's almost a little too in-scene: It's Julie Delpy, the French, indie darling who's doing her whole effortlessly dressed down thing -- a black wrap dress, no bra -- talking about her perma-love interest from "Before Sunrise" and its sequel, "Before Sunset."

Of course, "his little balls" is not the stuff of their bittersweet romance films. But it is the sort of cavalier comment you'd find in her other pair of movies, "2 Days in Paris," and her newest, "2 Days in New York," except maybe a bit more over-the-top.

In the stateside sequel to 2007's "Paris," Marion (Delpy), a new mom who's no longer with her long-time paramour Jack (Adam Goldberg), begins again with another live-in beau, played by Chris Rock. The film borrows a lot from its Frenchie brethren -- this time, as the title suggests, Marion's dad and sis visit New York and proceed to wreak havoc on her life and her relationship.

Here, Delpy speaks candidly about "New York," Goldberg's negative feelings on "2 Days in Paris," her political stance and how she feels about Ethan Hawke calling her crazy.

Was "2 Days in New York" harder for you than "2 Days in Paris"?
Well, the first one was difficult because it was my first film, but this one was a little more difficult...doing a union film in New York, it?s like a moving circus every time you go anywhere.

Your mother starred in "Paris." It must have been incredibly difficult to do a sequel after she passed away.
Oh, that part. Well, that part was hard [during] the writing process because when I started writing the film my mom was alive and then she passed away. Then I kind of gave up the film, I was like, ?Forget it.? And then I thought of it as more of an homage to her and I felt like I needed to do it also for my dad. It wouldn?t be fair for him; he was really struggling with a lot of stuff. And I just wrote the screenplay -- also as an homage to my dad as an actor who?s such a lovely, funny guy. But I wanted to do an homage that wasn?t melodramatic because I hate melodrama. I mean, I do love melodrama but not in my life.

And your dad was on board?
Yeah...it was very helpful for me to write this film. And actually I wrote another film that I shot called ?The Skylab,? which is also an homage to my mom where I actually play her. It?s a French movie set in 1979 and I play her at 40...and I had to do it. I wrote the two films in 2009, and I had my baby, so I would write this film when he was napping and at night I would write ?The Skylab.? But it was very helpful. You know, I couldn?t handle the death so writing was very helpful.

Was Adam Goldberg at all upset that he wasn?t involved in the sequel? Did you confer with him?
Not really. [Laughs] He probably was a little upset. He wasn?t very happy with the first film.

Really? Why not?
He didn?t like it... He didn?t love it. The first time he saw it he sent me a text, he was like, ?You could have made a great film and you kind of failed.? I was like, ?OK. Thank you.? [Laughs] Yeah, he didn?t like it, which is fine! I was not even angry at him; he?s a very complex person.

And you dated him...
And I dated him. Yeah, I?m not angry at him, I?m not angry at anybody on the planet...I know where Adam comes from and he wanted something a little less funny, he wanted to be taken more seriously or something, I don?t know; it came from some weird place.

In ?New York? you got very upset with a critic who was not a fan of your work, so that?s not at all informed by your feelings?
I don?t have that thing about critics. Actually, what?s funny is that all my artist, writer, director friends [that part where I ream out a critic] is their favorite scene in the film, which is interesting. It?s kind of a wet dream of any artist to be facing your critic. But actually I?m not very much like that, like, if people don?t like my films, they don?t like my films.

So, no strangling of any critics?
I would never strangle a critic. [Laughs] I wouldn?t even confront them. Maybe I would make a joke... The worst thing, I could make a joke.

There are a lot of funny political moments in this movie; at one point, Chris Rock chats with a carboard cut-out of Obama. Do you think people will take these moments more seriously because it's an election year?
I am personally a big fan of Obama... A lot of people criticize him, even [among] the democrats, and I just feel it?s not right. Also, people don?t put themselves outside of the country -- the view of the United States since Obama got elected is another world compared to when Bush was in power. You can?t compare. If Romney gets elected, you have no idea how bad the U.S. is going to look to the world... When Democrats actually trash him it makes me crazy because it?s like, What? You want Romney instead? I mean, like, Really? You want that? That?s scary... Having a president that?s an intelligent person, it?s so refreshing -- who?s not in the hands, entirely, of a corporation, who?s not like a whore to the corporate world -- I mean, it?s really important nowadays.

We?re at a tiping point in the environment, we?re at a tipping point in so many places, it?s time to have someone who has his head on his shoulders and is an intelligent person. And even if he can?t do everything [perfectly], please, give him a break. He inherited a country that was in a state of economy that was really bad; the economy problem didn?t come from him. It came from before and from global issues that we need to figure out some economical system that maybe works better...bin Laden is not in this world anymore. If Bush had killed bin Laden, it would have been advertised on the moon for the rest of the century. They would have put a banner on the moon.

I wanted to ask you about Vincent Gallo?s role in this film as a kind of soul-buying devil figure. How did that come about?
Actually, he?s a good friend of mine and I don?t think he?s the devil at all. To me, he?s kind of a saint, actually. But he has something [in] his persona that?s a bit Machiavellian. But also, he?s an art collector for real and he would actually buy a soul if it was an art piece. So, I wrote it for him; I gave it to him.

Was that at all a comment on your relationship to Hollywood -- the selling of the soul and commercialization of art?
Yeah, I think, it?s more a comment [of] Marion saying you can sell anything nowadays; you can be famous for being famous [and] you can sell things that have no value. But what?s funny to me is that she sells her soul as a conceptual statement and then, five minutes later, she feels weird and she wants it back.

Where are you on the much-talked-about sequel to ?Before Sunrise?/ ?Before Sunset??
We?re writing.

Are you at all angry with Ethan Hawke for calling you crazy?
[Laughs] Well, he called me crazy but what?s sad is that people don?t understand what he means by crazy. I?m not a crazy person, honestly. I?ve directed four films in five years, maybe that?s crazy -- and had a baby at the same time -- but I?m far from crazy and Ethan didn?t mean it in a mean way...but it?s like you have to really watch what you?re saying about people. It?s like if I was saying he?s crazy, I don?t think he would like it. And if it ends up as the main title, ?Oh, Julie Delpy says Ethan Hawke is crazy.? ?Is he really crazy?? I mean, it?s like, not very nice. And especially because I?m a woman director and stuff. It?s so easy to put women in that idea that they?re crazy and I?m so not crazy... I mean, there?s no way I would have directed any film if I was crazy. I mean, crazy?s a dangerous word because what does that mean?

Do you have a title in mind for the next film?
?Before I?m Too Fat To Be Filmed.?
