Peninsula College students profit from their 'home' work

PORT ANGELES ? Student carpenters in the green building program at Peninsula College are working on their first mini-home.

The students, who began work in February on the structure at the Lincoln Center in Port Angeles, are finishing its exterior this month and expect to complete the interior in the fall.

They hope to sell the mini-home when it is completed and use the profits to fund similar projects next year ? and already have about eight people who are interested in purchasing it, they said.

The mini-home is 256 square feet and has a 48-square-foot deck.

?It's big for a mini-home,? said student Erik Fullingim.

Tumbleweed Tiny House Co. sells plans for mini-homes as small as 65 square feet.
Kitchen, bathroom, two lofts

The Peninsula College version features a kitchen, bathroom, living area and two sleeping lofts. To keep costs low, students installed a used toilet.

The green building program teaches both green construction and basic carpentry, encouraging energy-conscious construction.

This means they are caulking all the seams, which is something most contractors wouldn't do, Fullingim said.

This allows the building to be airtight and prevents energy waste.

The carpenters are using green materials where possible, Fullingim said. For example, they use Earth-friendly stains, finishes and caulk.

They also are using advanced framing techniques that, they say, use less lumber but provide the same strength as other methods.

They also avoided using chemicals that can be harmful to people who are sensitive to chemicals, making the mini-home hypo-allergenic, said Mitch Breece, who helps instructor Patrick Nickerson.

This is a realistic housing option for those who are sensitive to chemicals, Breece said.

Some $5,500 has been invested into the mini-home so far, Nickerson said.

A mini-home typically costs between $30,000 and $50,000.

The costs were kept low by the free labor of the students and the donations they received, said Nickerson.

He described mini-homes as an affordable-housing option, saying they are a great alternative to housing projects.

The concept of the mini-home may seem radical or unusual, but it is one of the hottest new trends in housing, Breece said.

Nickerson said there recently has been a mini-home movement in the United States and Canada.
One promoter and builder of mini-homes is in Port Townsend.

GreenPod Development, owned by Ann Raab, had a home featured at the Seattle Green Home Tour on Earth Day weekend, April 21-22.

Wills, Trusts, Pre-Nuptial Agreements, Living ... - The Korean Law Blog

We receive many calls requesting the notarization of wills, living wills, general and specific power of attorneys, pre-nuptial agreements and other like agreements and documents in Korea.? We, sometimes, notarize these agreements for clients, however, in most cases we refer the client to their local embassy in Seoul, since the embassy stamp has a far less chance of not being recognized in the foreign jurisdiction than a Korean notarial stamp.

This post was not written to tell you not to call me about notarial issues (actually don't contact me about notarial issues unless your nation does not have an embassy in Korea- contact your embassy), but to be aware that many of the agreements and documents that I have seen that were downloaded from online form libraries and blogs are worthless in Korea, Canada and many U.S. states.

In matters that are important for your life and livelihood, please spend a few bucks and have a professional draft these documents.? The professional should know about the recognition of these documents in Korea and, also, abroad.? Don't simply reply on the internet and luck.

This post was motivated by a prenuptial agreement that I just reviewed that was, obviously, downloaded from an online form library and that would have been invalidated by most U.S. courts if executed in its form.

Syria Turkey Relations: Turkey Deploys Troops, Anti-Aircraft Guns On Syrian Border

ANKARA, June 28 (Reuters) - Turkey is deploying troops along its border with Syria after one of its jets was shot down by Syria over the Mediterranean last week, a Turkish official said on Thursday.
"I can confirm there are troops being deployed along the border in Hatay province. Turkey is taking precautions after its jet was shot down," the official said on condition of anonymity.
He said he did not know how many troops or vehicles were being moved but said they were being stationed in the Yayladagi, Altinozu and Reyhanli border areas of Turkey's southern Hatay province. He said anti-aircraft guns were being stationed along the border.
He could not confirm media reports of troop movements further east along the border in the Turkish provinces of Gaziantep and Sanliurfa. (Reporting by Jonathon Burch; Editing by Janet Lawrence)

Google Earth 7.0 for Android brings new, super-detailed 3D maps for some cities

Google Earth for Android gets new 3D maps for some cities

Here's a bit of a surprise that slipped under the radar during the Google I/O keynote: Google Earth for Android has been updated to 7.0 to take advantage of the new 3D map technology it unveiled at another special event just a few weeks ago. As a refresher, the visuals are automatically created from 45-degree aerial imagery and can pick up 3D elements as subtle as trees. Before you go racing to your hometown to see how it looks in 3D, be aware that just a handful of cities and regions exploit that dimension. Besides San Francisco Bay, the full coverage extends to Boulder, Boston, Charlotte, Lawrence, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Portland, San Antonio, San Diego, Santa Cruz and Tampa in the US, with Rome being the lone international hotspot. If that's too few places to visit, there's always the addition of guided tours. Android users can head over Google Play to get the update today; iOS users shouldn't fret, as they'll get the new maps soon.

Project Butter improves Android 4.1's speed to a silky-smooth 60FPS

Project Butter

As part of its unveiling of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google has unveiled Project Butter, a major effort to squash Android's frequent problems with device lag, as well as Systrace to help diagnose performance. Project Butter lets the CPU and graphics run in parallel, rather than crash into each other, and has a big impact on both real and perceived speed: the entire interface runs at 60 frames per second on sufficiently fast hardware. Graphics are now triple-buffered to keep scrolling and transitions humming along, and the processor will swing into full gear the moment you touch the screen to keep input lag to a minimum. Systrace, in the meantime, will help developers stamp out what performance hiccups remain. The tracing tool will be a part of the Jelly Bean SDK, so every coder can get an app running in tip-top shape.

Jack Mirkinson: 'The Newsroom' Premiere Recap: BP Oil Spill Covered In Aaron Sorkin's First Episode

It's in some ways appropriate that the legendary film critic Andrew Sarris passed away just as the chatter about "The Newsroom," Aaron Sorkin's new show about cable news, reached a fever pitch. Sarris was most famous for bringing the auteur theory -- which said that the director and the director's vision is the true creative centerpiece of a film-- to a wide American audience. It's largely thanks to the endurance of that theory that we're often willing to see a movie solely because of who is directing it.

Television has become a wildly auteurist medium as well. Viewers obsess over showrunners and creators (witness the recent frenzy over whether or not "Community" will ever be the same without Dan Harmon) in the same way that they do over film directors.

Sorkin, whose iron and obsessive fist over his shows is well known, is a television auteur if ever there was one. He can get an audience to follow him, for the very good reason that he's been the primary creative force behind some fantastic television in the past.

A pity, then, that the pilot of "The Newsroom" (Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO) is such a letdown -- a case of auteurism gone awry.

Last week, I saw Wes Anderson's new "Moonrise Kingdom." Anderson is an auteurist's dream, someone who has a distinct world that he wants to return to over and over again. His movies aren't set in any recognizable place -- they're all in an off-kilter corner of his mind, with their own mannerisms and environments.

But it's tough when you're so unerringly committed to a particular kind of vision. Get it right and your uniqueness is thrilling. Get it wrong and you've descended into insufferable self-parody. "Moonrise Kingdom" happened to be the first Anderson film in a great while where I thought his personal tics hadn't gotten the better of him.

I cannot say the same of Sorkin with "The Newsroom." All of his dangerous creative lines have been crossed in the first episode. He's most famous for his writing, that dense, quick-fire patter that he's likened rightfully to music. Here, his characters get woefully off-key, bogged down by interminable speechifying. Sorkin always likes to throw a large helping of screwball comedy into the mix; in "The Newsroom," the attempts at comedy mostly fall flat. Mostly though, his sanctimony, always in danger of boiling over, seems to have exploded out of control. The audience drowns in it.

As the episode starts, it's the spring of 2010, and Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) is speaking before a bunch of college kids on a panel. A famous TV journalist, he's supposed to be the sober, impartial centrist, sandwiched between a conservative and a liberal. Will makes a point of never revealing his political leanings, so he gives evasive answers to policy questions. Then, a young woman gets up and asks the panelists to say why America is "the greatest country in the world." (Which is totally something someone would ask, ever.)

Will's answer doesn't satisfy the panelist, who says he won't let him leave until he gives him a "human moment." (Which is totally something that would happen.) Then Will launches into a tirade about how, since America is "seventh in literacy" and several other statistics, he doesn't know "what the fuck [the girl is] talking about -- Yosemite?" (Which is also something that would happen, though it's a good line.)

Now, I cover the media for a living, so it's possible that I'm not willing to cut Sorkin as much slack as others. First of all: We all remember that time that Brian Williams was speaking at a college campus and some interviewer pinned him to his chair and refused to let him leave until he talked about how much he loves America, right? And then he flipped out? Yeah, I don't remember that either.

Yes, this is a TV show, and it's not supposed to reflect reality perfectly. In an earlier interview I did with Sorkin, he made this point very nicely. "At the risk of sounding too cute, it's not important to me that something be real, but it's very important to me that it feels real," he said.

He's got a problem, though: "The Newsroom" doesn't feel real. Instead, it's trapped in some weird alternate universe. The very retro opening credits show pictures of Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, David Brinkley and Dan Rather -- giving off the impression of someone with a view of the media determinedly preserved in amber.

When Will goes into his big rant, he eulogizes a time when the nation was "informed by great men -- men who were revered." Oh boy. Five minutes in, and this already?

The fallout is swift. Blaming vertigo medication, Will leaves the country (we're meant to believe he brings Erin Andrews with him). When he gets back, the staff of his show, "News Night," has all fled to another show and his boss, Charlie Skinner (Sam Waterston, very shouty, but quite a loveable rogue here), has brought back his ex-producer and ex-girlfriend MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer) to run his program. This is a Very Big Deal, as is immediately made clear by Will's total freakout. We get a lot of "over my dead body" kind of back-and-forths, and hints of some ugly fallout between MacKenzie and Will.

We also meet her producing partner Jim Harper (John Gallagher Jr.). He immediately gets shoved into a love triangle with Maggie Jordan (Alison Pill, wasted in this episode), an assistant who gets bumped up to associate producer, and Don (Thomas Sadoski), Will's former executive producer. This last plot point is especially tedious; MacKenzie almost literally tells Jim, "go flirt with Maggie," and then he does. It's a transparently lazy method on Sorkin's part.

As MacKenzie, Mortimer falls victim to what The New Yorker's Emily Nussbaum has correctly identified as the show's bad habit of failing the "show don't tell" test. She comes onto the scene fresh from a rough tour as a foreign correspondent, so we get repeated references to the "two Peabodys and the scar from covering a Shiite protest in Islamabad" that she picked up along the way. "She's been to way too many funerals for a girl her age," we're told.

Mortimer also gets stuck with some of the more excruciating monologues. MacKenzie has returned with the intention of veering away from Will's flavorless pandering and making a hard-hitting news show -- a sort of hour-long version of Anderson Cooper's "Keeping Them Honest" segment -- instead. In her efforts to convince Will of this, she actually says things like, "There's nothing more important in a democracy than a well-informed electorate!" Spare me, please.

Mortimer and Daniels have decent chemistry, though they don't crackle together yet. Daniels is energetic in the role, but Will's a perpetual crank ("I'm affable!" he shouts at one point, one of the funnier lines in the episode). He's bogged down --well, everyone is, but him most of all -- by Sorkin's penchant for self-righteousness and self-pity in his characters.

MacKenzie is cast firmly in the kooky-klutzy-scatterbrained mold that almost all high-powered, seemingly brilliant female characters seem to get shoved into. Mortimer is charming, but I fear the path MacKenzie is on, and Sorkin hasn't made me care about her relationship with Will yet.

Will also sits down with Charlie to fret about this supposedly pathbreaking new turn the show might take. It's another chat that shows the bubble Sorkin appears to be living in. Anchors getting aggressive and calling people out? You must be joking!

"Anchors having an opinion isn't a new phenomenon," Charlie tells him. "Murrow had one and that was the end of McCarthy. Cronkite had one and that was the end of Vietnam."

Putting aside the dubiousness of those claims, a more relevant line would have said something like "Keith Olbermann had one..." But Sorkin seems to go back and forth on whether or not he wants to try to connect with the way the media world actually works these days. It's here where we also find out that Will is a registered --but moderate!--Republican. We'll see how that goes.

Then the show shifts. An oil rig has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, and Don, who's still the nominal EP, doesn't want to give it much thought. But Jim senses a bigger story and, over Don's objections, the team pursues it. Of course, this is the right thing to do, as the BP scandal winds up spiraling out of control. Will suddenly morphs into a dogged, incisive questioner, flexing muscles that have supposedly long been dormant as he tangles with Halliburton representatives. The power of journalism is laid bare for all to see, etc.

Leaving aside the fact that hard-hitting investigative journalism barely ever originates from a cable news show, this part of the episode is more pleasant to watch. Sorkin's decision to use real-life events as a backdrop is risky, but the pursuit of the story does at least make the pace of the episode pick up, and I'm a sucker for reportorial zeal. There are a lot of triumphant violins, and then a few really quite stupid plot twists between Will and MacKenzie, and the pilot wraps up. Whew!

Now, I'm making it seem like this show might be irredeemable. It's not irredeemable. Sorkin is a frequently great writer. He's got a really, really good cast. It's foolish to write any of them off after one or two episodes. But, so far, I'm very worried. Nine more episodes of this? Let's hope not.

"The Newsroom" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.

The dames of "Downton Abbey" have traded their first televised barbs!?

Shirley MacLaine, who is joining the season three cast as Lady Cora's mother, Martha Levinson, was honored on June 7 with a lifetime achievement award from the American Film Institute. During the ceremony, Elizabeth McGovern (who plays Lady Cora) introduced a clip from the upcoming season, which aired June 24 on TVLand. But it wasn't just any clip -- it was the first meeting between Martha and the sharp-tongued Dowager Countess (played by Maggie Smith).?

Check it out:

Clearly, fans of the show are in for some great dialogue between the two ladies! As Joanne Froggatt (who plays maid Anna) told us, Smith and MacLaine not only have "amazing" chemistry, the two characters will "get to have some spiky conversations between them."

"Downton Abbey" season three will air sometime in 2013 on PBS.

We can't wait!

Who do you predict will win the majority of season three's verbal throwdowns: the Dowager Countess or newcomer Martha Levinson? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Samsung pegs LTE Galaxy S III for South Korea in July, quad-core quite possibly intact (update: yes!)

Samsung pegs LTE Galaxy S III for South Korea in July, quadcore quite possibly intact

Remember that dream version of the Galaxy S III that melded the Exynos 4 Quad, LTE-based 4G and 2GB of RAM all in one ultimate device? It now looks much closer to reality. Just as the 3G version is landing on the country's shores through SK Telecom, Samsung is sending word that the Korean LTE version is due in early July -- and Chosun claims it should have the best of all worlds in terms of performance. There should even be DMB TV tuning and a 500-title Video Hub for local movie lovers. We're anxious about just what that combination could do to battery life and the price, neither of which were mentioned up front. There may be good reasons why the US versions run on the dual-core Snapdragon S4, after all. Still, if the Korean LTE version doesn't have to make any sacrifices and is just a few weeks away from stores, it'll be hard not to turn a deep shade of green watching our friends in Seoul get what could easily be the better deal.

Update: The company has since piped up and confirmed to The Verge that the Korean LTE version is, in fact, quad-core. The LTE sits on a discrete modem chip where it's normally more tightly integrated on the Snapdragon, however -- and that means a potential knock against the runtime given that the 2,100mAh battery hasn't been beefed up.

'Peter Pan' Balotelli cool before England match

By ANDREW DAMPF

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:35 p.m. ET June 23, 2012

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -While Mario Balotelli likened himself to Peter Pan off the pitch, Italy's often volatile striker showed surprising focus in pure football terms before Sunday's showdown with a familiar England squad.

The 21-year-old forward met the media on Saturday for the first time at the European Championship and revealed how much "fun" it's going to be facing three of his Manchester City teammates in the quarterfinals - England goalkeeper Joe Hart, center back Joleon Lescott and midfielder James Milner.

"They know me and I know them," Balotelli said. "I just hope we win. Even though they're my teammates, I hope they're going to lose."

Balotelli has been the center of discussion at Italy's camp ever since the squad arrived in Poland.

In the team's opener against Spain, he wasted a wonderful scoring opportunity by inexplicably slowing down just enough for defender Sergio Ramos to catch up with him and strip him of the ball.

Then, after losing his starting spot in the final Group C match against Ireland, he came off the bench and scored one of the most spectacular goals of the tournament - an acrobatic, midair bicycle kick on the volley.

"There's always going to be criticism. It's normal when you play 60, 70 or 90 minutes that a player is going to make mistakes," Balotelli said. "Criticism helps you improve."

But after scoring against the Irish, defender Leonardo Bonucci rushed over and used his hand to cover Balotelli's mouth, apparently fearful that the striker was unleashing a verbal assault on anyone and everybody.

"We keep saying how young he is, but he's really a (young) man now," midfielder Daniele De Rossi said recently, while his agent Mino Raiola compared him to Peter Pan, the mischievous boy character who can fly and who never ages.

So which label does Balotelli prefer?

"Those are metaphors for Mario the person, not Mario the player, so it's not really suited for the match tomorrow," Balotelli said. "I think Mario is a man. But I am a bit of a Peter Pan, because I'm free. But I definitely feel more of a man than Peter Pan."

In effect, Balotelli's childlike spirit is never far from the surface, such as when he played with the corner flag between his legs in training earlier this week, or with constant practical jokes involving his strike partner, Antonio Cassano.

But Balotelli also appreciates his fans. When scores of schoolchildren came out onto the pitch asking for autographs two days ago, he stayed out satisfying the kids' demands longer than any other player.

Milner discussed the two sides to Balotelli - the one that sometimes appears he has his mind elsewhere, and the other who often plays brilliantly, having helped City to its first Premier League title in 44 years last month.

"He's lucky, he knows two of me," Balotelli said, smiling and looking relaxed with his arms resting on the table in front of him.

But which Balotelli will show up against England?

"I'm going to give my all, then it's up to you to enjoy it or be angered by it," Balotelli said. "Mario the person doesn't need to show anything to anyone. Those that know me know what I'm about."

Still, Balotelli remains a mystery to many fans. He usually doesn't celebrate after scoring, and wasn't about to contemplate how he might react if he finds the target against England.

"First, let me score, then we'll see," he said. "The national-team jersey has been something special to me since I was a kid, but that hasn't affected me here. I haven't had any problems - neither off the pitch nor when I scored."

Sony to Invest in Troubled Olympus

Japan's Sony (IW 1000/33) will inject about $623 million into troubled Olympus (IW 1000/362) as the camera and medical equipment maker rebuilds its finances after a massive cover-up scandal, reports said Friday. The 50-billion-yen deal would make Sony the single biggest Olympus shareholder with more than 10% of its stock, according to the Nikkei business daily, public broadcaster NHK and other Japanese media. The Nikkei said the firms are planning to reach a final deal by next month, but the two firms declined to comment on the story. The latest reports come after earlier stories pegged Sony, rival Panasonic (IW 1000/30) and Fujifilm among the likely candidates to invest in the scandal-hit firm. Olympus has announced a major overhaul that includes cutting about 7% of its workforce, while its new chief has publicly said he is seeking a capital injection to shore up its finances. Olympus's reputation -- and Japan's corporate governance image -- were badly damaged after its British former chief executive blew the whistle last year over $1.7 billion worth of losses that the company had moved off its balance sheet.? The firm initially denied allegations it had used past acquisitions and outsized consultant fees to hide the huge losses dating back to the 1990s, but eventually admitted wrongdoing. In March, the company and three former senior executives -- including ex-president Tsuyoshi Kikukawa -- were charged over their role in the scandal.

South American governments lash out at ouster of Paraguay's president

ASUNCION, Paraguay - President Fernando Lugo's rapid impeachment and ouster by lawmakers has plunged Paraguay into crisis and unleashed a wave of criticism by fellow leftist leaders in Latin America.

The former Roman Catholic bishop elected on a pledge to help Paraguay's poor said he would step aside following Friday's Senate vote to remove him from office, even though he called it a blow to democracy.

His quick acceptance of his ouster appeared to have prevented a bigger confrontation and potentially violent protests in the streets of Paraguay's capital of Asuncion, where his supporters had gathered. But other South American presidents were critical of the impeachment trial, which several called a de-facto coup d'etat.

"This goes beyond Fernando Lugo. It goes beyond Paraguay. It's about true democracy for all of our America," said Ecuador's leftist president, Rafael Correa, adding that his government will not recognize any government in Paraguay other than Lugo's.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said he won't recognize the "illegal and illegitimate government" that replaced Lugo either. Chavez said his ally "preferred the sacrifice" of stepping aside, and that the trial had been a setup.

In Argentina, the government of President Cristina Fernandez said it "is not going to validate the coup d'etat that just occurred" in Paraguay. Bolivian President Evo Morales also called it a coup.

Chilean Foreign Minister Alfredo Moreno said "we are worried" that Lugo's ouster "did not fulfill the minimum standards of due process and the legitimate defense that any person deserves." He said his country would decide its position toward the new Paraguayan government in the coming days.

The rapid and negative reaction by many South American governments does not bode well for the international acceptance of newly sworn-in President Federico Franco.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos also expressed concern. "These legal procedures shouldn't be used to abuse," Santos said at a news conference. "What we want is to help stability and democracy be maintained in Paraguay."

Santos said that on Thursday during the Rio+20 environmental summit in Brazil, presidents of the South American country grouping known as Unasur agreed to send their foreign ministers to Paraguay in hopes of halting Lugo's ouster so he could serve out his remaining eight months in power.

"But unfortunately that was not possible ... and Congress proceeded with a political trial to remove President Lugo from power," the Colombian president said. "We very much lament what has happened."

Mexico's foreign ministry said in a communique that although the process followed procedures laid out in Paraguay's constitution, "Mexico considers that said proceeding didn't grant ex-President Lugo the space or time for his defense."

Amid the criticism, Franco directed his foreign minister to try reach out to the region's governments.

"The foreign minister of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, said the situation in Paraguay is grave. Therefore we want to show that the political trial is a constitutional tool that is legal and legitimate," said Franco, who had been vice president under Lugo.

During the trial in the Senate, Lugo's supporters had massed in the streets facing off with riot police. But Lugo later went on national television to say he would step down.

"I say goodbye as president," a smiling Lugo said.

The Senate tried Lugo on five charges of malfeasance in office, including an alleged role in a deadly confrontation between police and landless farmers that left 17 dead.

After the five-hour trial, 39 senators voted to dismiss Lugo, while four senators voted against and two were absent.

It was a dramatic demise for the once-popular leader who previously had stepped down as a popular Roman Catholic "bishop of the poor" to run for the presidency amid a leftward swing in South America.

Lugo's removal after nearly four years in office highlighted his inability to find a balance with one-time allies who increasingly disapproved of his leftist policies and strident, uncompromising style. The trial came a day after Paraguay's lower house of Congress voted to impeach Lugo.

Crowds of pro-Lugo protesters took to the streets condemning the impeachment trial and expressing support for the president. When several dozen young protesters tried to break through a police barricade to reach Congress, police in anti-riot gear drove them back on horseback and using tear gas and water cannons.

Some protesters listened to the vote on speakers set up in the street, and booed lawmakers who voted for Lugo's dismissal. When the vote was over, some chanted "Lugo president!" Others wept. After Franco's swearing in, the crowd of protesters waned.

Franco, of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party, is now to serve out the rest of Lugo's term, which ends in August 2013. The 49-year-old Franco has political experience as a former state governor and at first had been part of a political alliance that supported Lugo.

Lugo decided not to attend the trial, instead watching on television from the presidential palace while his lawyers spoke on his behalf.

The Senate rejected a request by his lawyers for a period of 18 days to prepare their arguments. The Senate's president, Jorge Oviedo, said there were no grounds for such a request.

"I'm angry. More than because of the impeachment trial, because of the reaction of the Liberals who are celebrating as if they won elections," said protester Fiorella Galli. "The country is in a complete situation of insecurity and instability."

A smaller group of pro-Franco demonstrators gathered for a separate rally during the congressional proceedings, holding signs reading: "The trial is constitutional."

"I think Lugo had to go because he didn't do things well," said Carlos Solis, an engineer who said he thinks Franco will be a better president.

Lugo left the presidential palace on Friday as the military guard formally saw him off with a bugle tune.

The impoverished, landlocked nation has a long history of political instability. Some in Paraguay were initially concerned that the political showdown could spark street protests such as those that followed the 1999 assassination of Vice President Luis Maria Argana.

Some analysts said later that Lugo's quick acceptance likely avoided a more severe and potentially bloody crisis.

"He seems to have handled it very well, considering he had no real opportunity to mount a defense. So far his actions have probably prevented violence," said Stephen Johnson, director of the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. "When all the dust settles, Paraguay will need to amend its impeachment procedures to assure a more transparent, orderly process. Presidential removal is an area where many Latin American constitutions are weak."

Lugo was elected four years ago on promises of agrarian reform to help the country's many poor and landless people, but his more moderate government allies have increasingly turned against him in recent years.

Lugo's impeachment trial was triggered in part by an attempt by police to evict about 150 farmers from a remote, 4,900-acre (2,000-hectare) forest reserve, which is part of a huge estate. Advocates for the farmers said the landowner, a politician, used political influence to get the land from the state decades ago, and say it should have been put to use for land reform.

Six police officers, including the brother of Lugo's chief of security, and 11 farmers died in the clash last week. Lugo's opponents blamed the president. Lugo had expressed sorrow at the confrontation and accepted the resignations of his interior minister and his chief of police.

The president also was tried on four other accusations, including that he improperly allowed leftist parties to hold a political meeting in an army base in 2009; that he allowed about 3,000 squatters to illegally invade a large Brazilian-owned soybean farm; that his government failed to capture members of a guerrilla group, the Paraguayan People's Army, which carries out extortion kidnappings and occasional attacks on police; and that he signed an international protocol without properly submitting it to Congress for approval.

Lugo's support had steadily eroded recently, while his opponents had grown stronger, said Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue think tank in Washington. "It is hard to see the offenses leveled against him as anything but a pretext for removing an unpopular president," Shifter said.

"If presidents were ousted because of the reasons cited in this case, there would be few Latin American presidents left in office," he said. "The opposition simply didn't agree with Lugo's policies and didn't approve of the way he governed. As a result, the opposition manipulated the system, adhering to the letter of the law but departing from the principle of democracy."

Lugo's election in 2008 had ended 61 years of rule by the Colorado Party, and he had regularly clashed with Congress, where he had few firm allies.

Lugo's relationship with Franco and the moderate Authentic Radical Liberal Party quickly deteriorated after he was elected with their support. His partners were upset after he gave a majority of Cabinet ministry posts to leftist allies, and handed a minority to the moderates.
