Pastors for Peace launches a new civil disobedience challenge to the US blockade of Cuba ?

In July 2013, activists from more than 40 cities in the US, Canada and Mexico are organizing a week of activities in support of the 24^thFriendshipment to Cuba.? As part of this civil disobedience challenge, caravanistas will carry with them humanitarian aid such as insulin, the majority of which is made by US companies and therefore difficult for Cuba to import.? They will also bring construction tools and supplies to help in the reconstruction efforts in Santiago de Cuba, which was severely affected by Hurricane Sandy.

When London?s Fauja Singh Met India?s Milkha Singh

It was a starry evening in Southall when The Flying Sikh MILKHA SINGH visited SRI GURU SINGH SABHA GURUDWARA to meet Fauja Singh, the ?World?s oldest Marathon Man?. The community joined them in full force to serenade sporting icon Milkha Singh who in fact inspired Fauja Singh to start his exciting Marathon career.

During the first ever international tete-a-tete between the two sporting legends, Milkha Singh and Fauja Singh were ecstatic to meet each other and Fauja Singh presented Milkha Singh with a special Sikhs in the City T-shirt as a memento.

The meeting took place during the UK promotions of ?Bhaag Milkha Bhaag?, one of the most anticipated Indian films, based on the life story of Milkha Singh.

Milkha Singh said he feels, ?honored with Rakesh Omprakash Mehra directing the biopic based on his life and struggle and hence has decided to accompany him on this journey in the global promotions of the film?. The soon to-be released, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which reveals the hardships and life story of the 77 year old, featuring Farhan Akhtar as Milkha Singh, is already creating a huge buzz with its hit music, trailers and international star cast.

BAFTA nominated film director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra?s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag releases worldwide on 12th July 2013 through Reliance Entertainment.

In trip to Japan, delegation to promote Nebraska beef

A delegation of Nebraska ranchers and farmers is heading to Japan on Sunday to promote beef exports to the Cornhusker State's second-largest trading partner.

Davenport, Neb., corn and beef producer Mark Jagels, incoming chairman of the U.S. Meat Export Federation, said the delegation includes five people, himself included.

The group is scheduled to meet with Japan-based importers, retailers and food writers, with the aim of increasing demand for Nebraska beef. The trip comes after Japan agreed in January to permit imports of U.S. beef from animals aged 30 months and younger, up from an earlier restriction of 20 months and younger that was adopted after a 2003 mad-cow disease scare involving one case of the disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, in Washington involving a Canadian-born cow.

Jagels said beef from Australia and New Zealand gained some market share from U.S. producers in the disease-scare aftermath.

?The 30-month standard covers 95 percent of U.S. cattle production,? said Jagels, who becomes the federation chairman in November. ?The goal now is to return U.S. beef imports to pre-2003 levels.?

On the agenda is a major tasting event with hundreds of guests, supermarket visits with free samples and interviews with food bloggers. Jagels said there is a large network of such writers in Japan, mostly women, who have a lot of clout when it comes to kitchen matters.

Tim Scheer, the Nebraska Corn Board chairman who is making the trip, said the delegation plans to emphasize the safety of U.S. beef.

?I eat it every day and serve it to my family,? said Scheer, saying the sentiment serves as his best testimonial to prospective buyers.

Still, Asian consumers have long memories about beef troubles. South Korea, once the No. 3 destination of for U.S. beef exports, was the scene of street protests that attracted 100,000 people just five years ago when import bans were lifted.

U.S. ranchers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture say current monitoring, testing and culling procedures are effective and prevent diseased meat from entering the food supply.

Cattle can develop mad cow disease from eating infected feed. People who eat meat that has contacted infected cattle tissues can develop a variant of the fatal Creutzfeldt?Jakob brain disease.

Since the disease was first reported in 1996, 227 people worldwide, including three in the United States, have been diagnosed with the illness, according to 2012 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control.

When Japan allowed imports of beef only 20 months and younger, producers were required to show documentation of age, and processors and packers were required to keep a strict schedule. Because the Japanese standard was different from other importers, documenting and proving the identity of cattle throughout the system required extra time and effort along each step of the production chain.

Other Nebraskans on the trade trip include Dale Spencer, a beef producer from Brewster, and president of the Nebraska Cattlemen; Kyle Cantrell, a corn and beef producer from Anselmo; and Doug Parde, a corn and beef producer from Sterling.

Kevin Iole: Anderson Silva TKO3 Chris Weidman -- According to Dana White, Georges St-Pierre is so confident of a Weidman win he doesn't believe a fight with Silva and himself will happen. Weidman has the tools to test Silva. But Weidman has fought only two Top 10-caliber opponents and nobody near the top of the Top 10. Silva may have some harrowing moments, but I still think he's coming out of this with his arm raised.

Maggie Hendricks: Anderson Silva TKO2 Chris Weidman -- A piece of me wants to buy into the hype and pick Weidman, but Silva has been nothing short of great in his recent fights.

Weidman's in your face style will be his downfall. He's going to come out aggressive and be punished for it. There has been no secret that he plans to take Silva down. I expect a perfectly timed knee or uppercut will end this fight. -- Christopher Walder

Kevin Iole: Frankie Edgar TKO2 Charles Oliveira -- This is a must-win fight for Frankie Edgar if he's going to retain any hope of remaining in the UFC title picture, regardless of division. He's lost three in a row and a fourth would eliminate him from the title picture entirely. Edgar's wrestling and boxing are big differences here, and he's faced better opposition.

Maggie Hendricks: Frankie Edgar W3 Charles Oliveira -- This fight is so important for Edgar that he will take no chances here. He'll use his wrestling skill to control Oliveira and his stand-up to wear him down on the way to a decision.

Kevin Iole: Tim Kennedy W3 Roger Gracie -- Evenly matched fight, and I could see Gracie by submission, but I think Kennedy will avoid that and go on to the points win.

Maggie Hendricks: Tim Kennedy W3 Roger Gracie -- Though Gracie has a strong submission game, Kennedy has never lost by a submission. Save the first fight in his career, Kennedy's losses were always due to a judges' decision. He will fight smart in this one to get another win.

As an Army vet, I am biased. But more over, [Kennedy's] transitions are the epitome of smooth. The only way to stop Tim Kennedy from grinding you out and pounding you through the floor is to stop his takedowns, and that just isn't going to happen while he is in the kind of shape that he is in right now. Watch some of his fights and pay attention to his guard passes and transitions. He bypasses guards, slipping from side control into full mount against great jiu jitsu fighters like he's in a Ferrari on the autobahn. You just can't control him. Roger's best chance really is to keep it standing and outrange Tim. -- Thomas Rose

Kevin Iole: Mark Munoz TKO3 Tim Boetsch -- Boetsch is not an easy out, and Munoz is returning after a lengthy layoff. But I think Munoz is the more explosive wrestler and harder hitter and will catch Boetsch with something big as the fight wears on.

Maggie Hendricks: Mark Munoz W3 Tim Boetsch -- Both fighters are coming off ugly losses that they would like to forget. Munoz has the better wrestling and some scary striking, so I see him taking this one.

Dot Earth Blog: 90 Degrees + A.C. + Open Doors = Hamptons Energy Policy?

While in East Hampton, N.Y., to discuss America?s energy choices and issues related to the current gas-drilling blitz at a screening of the anti-fracking manifesto ?Gasland, Part II,? I couldn?t help noticing something that illustrates the mismatch between attitudes and actions on energy in this country:

In a stroll down Main Street on a 90-degree day, door after door was wide open, meaning that air conditioners were, in essence, straining to cool the planet. (Physics says this doesn?t work.)?

In 2008, New York City enacted a law prohibiting this practice (with some exceptions). While the city has had to deal with persistent lawbreakers, at least it has set a standard that matches the rhetoric of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the City Council.

In 2006, facing a summer power crunch, the Long Island Power Authority found that 65 percent of the stores it surveyed in East Hampton left their doors open and their air conditioning on.

I haven?t had time to check for an update, or to see whether the town has any statutes cracking down on this waste.

But on my walk along the retail strip, what could be described as an ?open door energy policy? appeared to prevail. (I was happy to see plenty of exceptions, including London Jewelers, Bookhampton and Starbucks.)

I?ll update this post if someone can point me to relevant information on new local laws or the like.

In the meantime, I?ll note this: After the ?Summer Docs? screening tonight, I?m sure there?ll be plenty of disagreement between me and?Josh Fox. (The panel also includes the actor?Alec Baldwin and the journalist Karl Grossman.)

But I presume we can all agree that East Hampton, and America, can do much, much better than this when it comes to the first step in an energy policy that works for the long haul ? cutting energy waste.
