Samsung Charged With AntiTrust Case For Using Patents as a ...

The europen guardian is inspecting if Samsung has broken Europen union?s competition laws over ?standards essential? patents.

They cover various technologies used in mobile phones including radio signalling standards and are controlled to assure a fair market. License must be given by the patent owners to have competition between the rivals fairly, feasibly and on non-discriminatory basis.

?We will issue a statement of objections very soon,? Almunia said, referring to the Commission?s charge sheet.?

The inspection into whether ?Samsung has failed to honour its unchangeble liability? to Frand terms, which was given in 1998, was mentioned by a barrage patent violation cases from the enterprises. It filed lawsuit againist Apple for 13 patents infringement which were related to 3G, for example.

In seeming expectation of Mr Almunia?s interference, on Tuesday Samsung said it was dropping an effort to ban the sale of some Apple devices in the Netherlands, France,Italy, Germany and Britain, however the company did not say it would freeze its court battle for reimbursement.

In August this year, Apple was compensated $1.05bn for damages after a Californian court found Samsung had copied cucial features of the iPhone & iPad. The patents which Samsung Electroniocs was accused Samsung by Apple Inc of violating in its Galaxy range were not ?standards essential?,although.

Targeting taste receptors in the gut may help fight obesity

Dec. 21, 2012 ? Despite more than 25 years of research on antiobesity drugs, few medications have shown long-term success. Now researchers reporting online on December 21 in the Cell Press journal Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism say that targeting taste sensors in the gut may be a promising new strategy.

The gut "tastes" what we eat -- bitter, sweet, fat, and savory -- in much the same way as the tongue and through the use of similar signaling mechanisms. The result is the release of hormones to control satiety and blood sugar levels when food reaches the gut. The sensors, or receptors, in the stomach respond to excess food intake, and their malfunction may play a role in the development of obesity, diabetes, and related metabolic conditions.

Drs. Sara Janssen and Inge Depoortere, of the Translational Research Center for Gastrointestinal Disorders at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, examine this possibility, offering insights into the latest research on the topic. They say growing evidence suggests that obesity and related conditions might be prevented or treated by selective targeting of taste receptors on cells in the gut to release hormones that signal a feeling of fullness, thereby mimicking the physiological effects of a meal and fooling the body into thinking that it has eaten.

"The effectiveness of bariatric surgery to cause profound weight loss and a decrease in the prevalence of diabetes and other obesity-related conditions is not completely understood, but it may involve changes in the release of gut hormones," says Dr. Depoortere. "Targeting extraoral taste receptors that affect the release of hormones that control food intake may offer a new road to mimic these effects in a nonsurgical manner."

Additional studies are needed to show which gut taste receptors might be effective drug targets for the prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes.

City of Pinson receives clean audit, plans to purchase prime real ...

By Lee Weyhrich

A presentation was made at the Pinson City Council meeting Thursday night by the accounting firm of Borland Benefield regarding the city?s annual audit. The city passed with flying colors.

Additionally, the council passed a resolution Thursday that will net the city three acres of prime real estate worth an estimated $700,000. The land runs near Highway 75 from the corner of Big 10 Tire through the Rite-Aid property. The total cost to the city for the property will be just over $262,000.

BHT Investments, Inc., the company that currently owns the property, was asking $375,000 for a portion of the property.? Due to government tax incentives, the owners approached the city of Pinson with the offer of a lifetime: the city could purchase that property at a reduced rate and the company would donate an attached parcel of land for free.

?Owners of property have certain tax advantages by selling to a city below market value or donating property,? Mayor Hoyt Sanders said.

As a stipulation of the deal, there are some limitations for the property?s use. Due to the presence of both Winn-Dixie and Rite-Aid nearby, the property cannot be developed for use of a competing drug or grocery store. The council hopes to develop the property into an area for restaurants, something the mayor said the city was sadly lacking.

The council will be required to make a down payment of $100,000, and then make payments thereafter. The one business already on the property, Rite-Aid, will be annexed into the city.

?With the Rite-Aid, we can assume from just a tax-base perspective that that property alone will pay for itself in 10 to 12 years ? even without further development,? Councilman Joe Cochran said.

In other city news, the council appointment of members to the vacant Zoning Board posts. David Gillian will replace John Harrison. Wayne Sellers will serve the last year of Michael Neel?s unexpired term, and Marvelyn Deese will serve another three years in her current position.

David Sparkman will replace Councilman Robbie Roberts on the Planning Commission.

The council also signed an ordinance establishing that Pinson is now part of the Purchasing Association of Central Alabama, a cooperative between various government entities that allows its members to share in bulk buys for better prices.

?Most cities in the area are members,? Sanders said. ?We are at the point where the paving projects we have planned for the next year will benefit us greatly.?

The yearly dues to the association are $700 annually, but the council believes the savings for materials will be many times that amount.

State Representative Allen Treadaway gave a presentation at the meeting on the economy and what it means for Alabamians. According to Treadaway, Alabama is the second highest state in regards to job creation, and the government has also been able to cut $600 million from the state budget, but the economy is still hurting funding for many projects. Despite this, however, Treadaway said there is hope for one part of the population that has largely dealt with cuts in recent years.

?I?ve talked to the governor and he believes this year we will be able to grant the teachers the raises they deserve,? Treadaway said.

American Legislators Approves Special Immigration Law For ...

A Nigerian living with a genetic disorder that causes facial tumors has earned a United State?s House of Representatives? bill to stay back and study in America.

The law was written to apply only to Sopuruchukwu Chukwueke, according to U.S. Senator, Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat, who sponsored the legislation.

The U.S. House passed it Tuesday and the Senate has already approved the bill which is now headed for Mr. Obama?s desk.

The law, made for Mr. Sopuruchukwu alone, allows him to remain in the U.S. despite the expiration of his visa. He will get the green card he needs to stay and study in America If Mr. Obama signs the legislation.

Mr. Sopuruchukwu, 26, intends to enroll in medical school at the University of Toledo, which has been waiting for his immigration status to be resolved.

?Only in this country can something this wonderful happen to someone like me,? Mr. Sopuruchukwu, whose middle name is Victor, said to Reuters. ?This is the best gift for Christmas ever.?

He hopes to be admitted to the University of Toledo?s medical school after the president accents to the bill.

Of the 83 private-relief measures introduced in the last two years, Chukwueke?s bill, S. 285, is the only one to have been passed by both houses of Congress, Reuters news agency said.

The bill would grant permanent residency to Mr. Chukwueke as long as he applies for it within two years of the bill becoming law. It would reduce, by one, the number of immigrant visas available to Nigerians and would bar preferential treatment for members of his family.

?Victor?s amazing courage and determination exemplify much of what is so great about our country,? Mr. Levin said in a statement. ?Already, his example has enriched Michigan and our nation, but I know that his contributions to our country are only beginning.?

Raised by Catholic nuns

According to Mr. Levin?s office, the Nigerian was born into impoverished conditions in Nigeria and suffered from neurofibromatosis, a condition in which tumors deformed his face. His parents abandoned him to an orphanage, and the Catholic nuns in Nigeria arranged for him to travel to the United States for treatment when he was 15.

He relocated to Southfield, Michigan, where he endured seven surgeries over the next 11 years. Even as he underwent seven surgeries, one of which resulted in the loss of his right eye, Mr. Sopuruchukwu graduated from Wayne State University with a bachelor?s degree in biochemistry and chemical biology with a 3.82 grade-point average.

Because he was in the United States under an expired visa, he was living under threat of deportation from the United States. Mr. Levin introduced legislation, known as a private bill, granting the immigrant permanent legal resident status. Though such bills rarely become law, immigration authorities generally defer deportation proceedings so long as such a bill is pending.

The Mobile Revolution in Travel | Business 2 Community

The travel industry has undergone severe disruptions in the past decade with the ever-changing face of online distribution, where sites like Expedia, Orbitz or Priceline now play pivotal roles in the travel purchase decision model. In this context, social media gains influence before, during and after the travel experience, whether it?s done through posting pictures on Facebook while at the resort, or commenting and sharing hotel reviews via Tripadvisor after the trip.

How customers shop on social media

In 2013, travel brands are facing the next paradigm shift, which has been brewing over the past two to three years: the mobile revolution.

MOBILE, A KEY DRIVER IN DIGITAL TRAVEL GROWTH

US Mobile Travel Bookers

According to a recent report from emarketer, total spending on online travel is expected to reach over $120 billion by the end of 2012 and should reach close to $129 billion by end of 2013, a yearly growth of 8%. Compared to overall online retail sales, online growth for travel is slow, mostly due to a certain level of maturity in the market. The US mobile travel market, however, is a different story. In 2012, it is estimated that 16 million Americans will have booked travel via a mobile device. By 2016, this number is expected to more than double to 36.7 million!

During this same time period, significantly more mobile users will not only purchase travel on their phones or tablets but also research their next destination, hotel or event through their device. People use their devices at hand to dream of their next trip, and this is where opportunities abound for travel marketers around the world in order to reach potential customer upstream, while they are still in aspirational research mode. In a study conducted this past November by Expedia MediaSolutions and ComScore, 2 in 3 mobile device owning travelers admitted to travel dreaming at least once a month or more!

Travel dreaming

FROM SOLOMO TO MOBILE-ONLY

One of the biggest etourism trends of 2012 was the rise of solomo, the convergence of social, local and mobile. Social and mobile are a natural fit: simply consider that 58% of all Facebook users access their account through a mobile device. In fact, social media represents the second most popular activity on mobile devices, after internet access, according to a survey conducted by O2 in the United Kingdom during the summer of 2012. Mobile users spend on average more than 17 minutes per day browsing and interacting through their various social accounts. What about local?

Geo-localization applications like Foursquare have been fighting hard to make their way and gain massive adoption, with limited success so far. At first a gaming application, where users could earn badges after so many check-ins at a given location, Foursquare has morphed into a full-fledged application to discover things to do, eat or see once in a given destination. Thus, mobile becomes a way to find new restaurants, according to peer reviews and comments left by friends from your network. OpenTable or Yelp are similar applications, and then there is Google also playing in this sphere, especially since it acquired the online travel agency ITA, restaurant reviews from Zagat and travel publisher Frommers.

Top 3 reasons to engage with mobile ads

Source: Nielsen study, with TelMetrics. Published in Tnooz, August 9th, 2012.

There are some, however, who believe mobile is much more than a channel and that it therefore deserves a core focus in the overall travel marketing strategy. Already, Google estimates that 25% of all travel-related searches are conducted via a mobile device, a figure that reaches 33% of searches specifically for accommodations. And looking at this chart taken from a Google study conducted in August 2012, the percentage is even higher when observing behaviors among leisure and business travelers. So it won?t be a stretch before we see things evolving from a ?mobile-first? mentality to a ?mobile-only? approach in the near future.

More Travelers Use Mobile for Travel Information

REAL-TIME & LAST-MINUTE ARE THE NEXT BATTLEFIELD

Whether it is for holiday packages, airfares or hotel and accommodations, more and more searches are now made last minute, which equates in most cases to mobile devices. Major online travel agencies have all developed sophisticated applications and mobile-friendly sites in order to capture this new reality, where estimates vary between 10-30% of all online bookings.

New players are entering the field, such as HotelTonight, a mobile application offering last-minute hotel deals providing up to 70% discounts for same-day reservations. Hotels dump their unused inventory, while mobile travelers take advantage of last-minute deals, a win-win situation, right? Not everyone agrees, as some hotel industry experts believe mobile channel should never be discounted, in particular when bookings are last-minute. The law of offer & demand will prevail, in the end?

KEY TAKEWAYS

  1. Mobile device ownership will continue to grow worldwide, and internet traffic will continue to shift from PC to tablets and smartphone devices;
  2. Applications drive travel brand engagement, in particular with airlines, hotels and online travel agencies;
  3. The most important element is to have a mobile site, in order to influence at all levels of the travel purchase funnel: aspiration, inspiration, decision-making, purchasing and living the experience;
  4. Despite of all the talk, a majority of travel industry brands have not yet embraced the mobile revolution. Those who move fast will gain a competitive edge, as long as it?s part of an over-arching marketing strategy.
